Battery Negative Cable Replacement Negative Cable Replacement

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the frame.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the negative battery cable to the frame.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Clean the grounding area and coat the area with a copper-impregnated ground sealer.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the cable to the frame bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  5. Connect the negative battery cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the negative cable from the starter.
  2. Remove the negative cable from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

  1. Clean the grounding area. Coat the grounding area with a copper-impregnated ground sealer.

  2. Object Number: 215031  Size: SH
  3. Connect the negative cable to the engine block.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Install the negative cable to the starter.
  6. Tighten

        • Tighten the negative cable to the starter to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).
        • Tighten the negative cable to the engine block to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the nut , bolt , washer, and the negative cable from the frame.
  2. Remove the bolt, washer, and the negative cable from the engine.
  3. Remove the negative cable .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the negative cable to the engine with bolt and washer.
  2. Clean the grounding area of the frame. Coat the surrounding area with a copper-impregnated ground sealer.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the negative cable nut, washer, and bolt to the frame.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the negative cable to the frame bolt to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
        • Tighten the negative cable to the engine bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).
