The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Some customers may report that their transmission mounted parking brake (12"x3" diameter drum) will not hold the truck on a 20% grade or less under heavy load operation. This may be the result of the park brake cable not being properly adjusted to fully apply the brake shoes against the drum.
Inspect the condition of the brake shoes (SI Document ID # 789867) and brake drum (SI Document ID # 789869) for wear or damage and repair as necessary. Adjust the park cable per instructions in SI Document ID # 1522780.
If after performing the above operations there is still a concern about the parking brake holding the vehicle on a grade, perform the following adjustment procedure.
The following procedure will aid in eliminating slack in the park brake cable resulting from normal operation stretch.
Remove the park brake drum, shoes, mounting assembly and actuating lever from the rear of the transmission per SI Document ID # 1492052. Reposition the actuating lever one (1) or two (2) splines over from its original location to remove any remaining slack in the cable. Reinstall all park brake components and readjust the cable as necessary at the pull lever in the cab (SI Document ID # 1522780).
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
