The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

2008 Kodiak or Topkick trucks may be equipped with a new CARB (California Air Resources Board) idle shutdown feature. This feature prevents extended engine idling by shutting off the engine.

There are two idle shutdown features programmed into the vehicle depending on parking brake use.

1. The engine will automatically shutdown after 15 minutes of idle time in Park or Neutral (parking brake not applied).

2. The engine will automatically shutdown after 5 minutes of idle time in Park or Neutral (parking brake applied).

Please see SI document titled "Engine Idle Control System Description" for a complete description of this feature.

Using GMVIS dealers will be able to verify if the vehicle is built with the idle shut down feature. There are specific RPOs associated with this feature.

Vehicles built with Emission RPO codes NC8/YF5 will be equipped with the idle shutdown feature. Some vehicles will be exempt from the idle shutdown feature. If RPO codes YF2, ANC, ANM, ANX, or B3D are found with NC8/YF5 the vehicle is exempt, and will not have idle shutdown.

Once a production ECM is set with or without the idle shutdown feature at the vehicle assembly plant, it cannot be changed in service. Additionally, all service ECMs will have this feature disabled.

If replacing or reprogramming the ECM on any 2008 Kodiak or Topkick equipped vehicle, the TIS terminal/Tech 2 may have an error message (due to the idle shutdown program installation) when attempting to download the calibration. If an error code is experienced while programming a 2008 Kodiak or Topkick, the dealer will have to contact Techline for assistance.

Note: All motorhome chassis are exempt from CARB idle shutdown regardless of the RPO strings.

Note: All vehicles with Federal Emissions RPO code NT8 are exempt from CARB idle shutdown regardless of the RPO strings.

Note: There may have been a small number of exempt vehicles built with the shutdown feature turned on. The exempt vehicles are any motorhome, any Federal Emissions RPO code NT8, or any vehicle equipped with RPO codes YF2, ANC, ANM, ANX, or B3D. If a dealer was to encounter an exempt vehicle with the shutdown feature turned on, contact techline to correctly program the vehicle.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
