J 3049-A Hydraulic Lifter Remover

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 470994  Size: SH
  1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
  2. Remove the valve rocker arms and push rods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
  3. Remove the valve lifter guide retainer bolts and retainer.

  4. Object Number: 470996  Size: SH

    Note: Mark, sort, or organize the valve lifters and guides for installation in their original location.

  5. Remove the valve lifter guide.
  6. Remove the valve lifters.

  7. Object Number: 719128  Size: SH
  8. Some valve lifters may be stuck in their bore due to gum or varnish deposits. These lifters can be remove using J 3049-A .
  9. Clean and inspect the valve lifters.

Installation Procedure

Note: If a new camshaft is installed, replace all the valve lifters.


    Object Number: 470996  Size: SH
  1. Coat the valve lifter rollers with prelube GM P/N 1052367 (Canadian P/N 992869) or equivalent.
  2. Note: If reusing the valve lifters, install the lifters in their original location. The valve lifter guide retainer must contact all of the valve lifter guides. If the valve lifter guide retainer is bent, the valve lifter guide retainer must be replaced.

  3. Install the valve lifters.
  4. Install the valve lifter guides over the flats on the valve lifters, making sure the rollers of the valve lifters are properly aligned with the camshaft lobes.
  5. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  6. Install the valve lifter guide retainer.
  7. Install the valve lifter guide retainer bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the valve lifter guide retainer bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  9. Install the valve rocker arms and push rods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
  10. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement.
