IGNITION NOISE IN SPEAKERS (REROUTE SPEAKER WIRES)

Model and Year: 1990 W CAR

Condition:

--------- Ignition noise may be present in either one or both front speakers.

Cause:

------ The speaker wires are routed in the main IP harness, very close to the wiring to the Direct Ignition System (DIS). The voltage spikes on this line can cause ignition noise.

Procedure:

--------- 1. Locate the affected speaker or speakers by using the "Balance" controls on the radio.

2. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove the radio.

3. Cut the wires to the affected speaker, and run new wires from the speaker connector to the radio connector, making sure the new wires are routed away from the main harness. The old wires need not be removed, but make sure they are taped in place to avoid rattles.

4. Reinstall radio. Reconnect negative battery cable. Perform MEMCAL relearn procedure as follows:

a. Place A/C controls (if equipped) in the "off" position.

b. Firmly apply the parking brake and block the drive wheels. Start the engine, and shift the transaxle to "drive" for automatics or "neutral" for manuals.

c. Allow the engine to run until the engine cooling fan has cycled once, or a maximum of 10 minutes.

d. Turn the ignition key to the "off" position for at least 5 seconds.

e. Start the engine, and shift the transaxle to "drive" for automatics or "neutral" for manuals.

f. Allow engine to run for at least 5 minutes.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
