Some owners of 1991-92 W cars may comment about a "rattle" noise when the Getrag 284 5-speed transaxle (M27) is in neutral with the clutch engaged and engine is at idle.
Various levels of minor gear "rattle" or noise are inherent in all manual transaxles. Customer may perceive gear "rattle" as clutch, engine, and/or transmission noise. The "rattle" noise is normal and will not affect the function or durability of the vehicle.
Inherently, a clutch disc that is designed to dampen neutral gear rattle may increase clunk between shifts or during throttle tip-in and tip-out.
Before replacing any components, test drive the vehicle to evaluate the severity of the neutral gear rattle and clunk (minor level of both these conditions is normal).
If the clunk is not objectionable, a different clutch disc is available to address the neutral gear rattle concern.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
