CAMPAIGN: CHEVROLET LUMINA 3.4L DOHC AND FEDERAL EMISSION

SUBJECT: PRODUCT CAMPAIGN 93C11

MODEL & YEAR: 1993 CHEVROLET LUMINA 3.4L DOHC ENGINE (LQ1) AND FEDERAL EMISSION SYSTEMS (NA5)

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT A SMALL QUANTITY OF 1993 CHEVROLET LUMINAS WITH 3.4L DOHC (LQ1) ENGINES WITH FEDERAL EMISSION SYSTEM WERE EQUIPPED WITH ENGINE CONTROL MODULES (ECM) THAT MAY CONTAIN AN INCORRECT CIRCUIT BOARD COMPONENT. DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE ECM (THAT WILL INCLUDE A MEM-CAL) WITH COMPLETE ASSEMBLIES PRIOR TO CUSTOMER DELIVERY. ECM'S WILL BE SENT DIRECTLY TO THE DEALERS WHO INITIALLY RECEIVED THE SUBJECT VEHICLES. DEALER CODES AND SUBJECT VEHICLE LISTING IS SHOWN AT THE END OF THIS MESSAGE.

IF A VEHICLE HAS BEEN SOLD OR TRADED TO ANOTHER CHEVROLET DEALER, IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DEALER WHO INITIALLY RECEIVED THE VEHICLE TO CONTACT THE OWNER OR SUBSEQUENT DEALER TO ARRANGE FOR THE PART TO BE PROVIDED IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN.

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY:

DEALERS ARE TO CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN STOCK PRIOR TO THEIR SALE. SHOULD VEHICLES BE SOLD INADVERTENTLY FROM YOUR NEW VEHICLE INVENTORY, PRIOR TO REPAIR, OWNERS ARE TO BE CONTACTED BY THE DEALER AND ARRANGEMENTS MADE TO MAKE THE REQUIRED CORRECTION ACCORDING TO INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS CAMPAIGN MESSAGE. DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN, AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNERS, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, AGE OF VEHICLE, OR OWNERSHIP, FROM THIS TIME FORWARD.

OWNER NOTIFICATION:

ALL INVOLVED VEHICLES MUST BE HELD AT THE DEALERS AND REPAIRED BEFORE DELIVERY TO CUSTOMERS. THEREFORE, THERE WILL NOT BE AN OWNER LETTER OF NOTIFICATION FROM CHEVROLET MOTOR DIVISION. IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT AN INVOLVED UNIT HAS BEEN DELIVERED TO A CUSTOMER, DEALERS ARE TO IMMEDIATELY CONTACT THE CUSTOMER AND ARRANGE FOR THE REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF THE ECM TO BE PERFORMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

PARTS INFORMATION:

PARTS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THIS CAMPAIGN ARE BEING SHIPPED DIRECTLY TO INVOLVED DEALERS BY CHEVROLET ON A NO CHARGE BASIS. PARTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE SHIPPED BEGINNING FRIDAY, MARCH 19, VIA FAST MEANS. THE COMPLETE ECM (WITH THE MEM- CAL ALREADY INSTALLED) SHOULD BE RECEIVED AND EXCHANGED AS A SINGLE UNIT. THESE ECM'S ARE NEW PRODUCTION UNITS EVEN THOUGH THE PACKAGING INDICATES THE PARTS ARE FROM A REMANUFACTURING CENTER. PLEASE NOTIFY YOUR PARTS DEPARTMENT OF THE SPECIAL HANDLING REQUIRED FOR THESE CAMPAIGN PARTS. THE REMOVED ECM ARE TO BE SENT TO THE LOCATION PROVIDED ON THE INFORMATION SHEET CONTAINED IN THE BOX. DO NOT RETURN THEM TO GMSPO!

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

2. REMOVE THE ENGINE COOLANT RESERVOIR.

3. REMOVE ECM MOUNTING HARDWARE AND ECM FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT.

4. DISCONNECT CONNECTORS FROM ECM.

5. CONNECT CONNECTORS TO REPLACEMENT ECM. PART #16181421.

6. INSTALL ECM IN VEHICLE USING MOUNTING HARDWARE REMOVED IN STEP 3 (TORQUE TO 1.6 - 2.2 NM).

7. REINSTALL ENGINE COOLANT RESERVOIR.

8. CONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE TORQUE BOLTS TO (TORQUE BOLTS TO 10.2 - 20.0 NM).

9. PERFORM FUNCTIONAL CHECK.

A. TURN IGNITION ON.

B. WITH CAVITIES A & B SHORTED AT ALDL CONNECTOR, CODE 12 SHOULD FLASH THREE TIMES (IF NO OTHER CODES ARE PRESENT). THIS INDICATES THE ECM IS INSTALLED AND FUNCTIONING PROPERLY.

10. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL:

EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS CAMPAIGN WILL REQUIRE A CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL. EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER AND THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.

EACH CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL IS TO BE LOCATED ON THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT IN AN AREA WHICH WILL BE VISIBLE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS BROUGHT IN FOR PERIODIC SERVICING BY THE OWNER. ADDITIONAL CAMPAIGN INFORMATION LABEL CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THE CHEVROLET DEALER ASSISTANCE CENTER (DAC). APPLY CAMPAIGN INFORMATION LABEL ONLY ON A CLEAN, DRY SURFACE.
