SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON REMOVING TRUNK LID APPLIQUE SCRATCHES OR ABRASIONS

MODELS: 1995-96 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO

FINE OR LIGHT SCRATCHES OR ABRASIONS MAY APPEAR ON THE SURFACE OF THE TRUNK LID APPLIQUE.

THESE SCRATCHES OR ABRASIONS MAY BE DUE TO AUTOMATIC CAR WASH BRUSHES, IMPROPER HAND CAR WASHING TECHNIQUES, INCORRECT WAXING OR POLISHING COMPOUND USAGE, ETC. THESE FINE OR LIGHT SCRATCHES OR ABRASIONS MAY OR MAY NOT BE UNIFORM IN DIRECTION, AND TYPICALLY CAN ONLY BE DETECTED VISUALLY AND NOT BY TOUCH.

IMPORTANT: IMPERFECTIONS TO THE APPLIQUE SURFACE THAT CAN BE DETECTED BY TOUCH SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS MEDIUM TO HEAVY, AND ARE GENERALLY NOT REPAIRABLE USING THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS BULLETIN.

FOR REMOVAL OF THESE LIGHT SCRATCHES OR ABRASIONS, CLEAN THE APPLIQUE SURFACE, MASK-OFF NAMEPLATE LETTERING/EMBLEM AND SURROUNDING PAINTED SURFACES, AND MACHINE POLISH APPLIQUE SURFACE USING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.

PROCEDURE:

1. WASH THE APPLIQUE AND SURROUNDING PAINTED SURFACES WITH SOAP AND WATER.

2. DRY ALL THE SURFACES WITH A SOFT COTTON TOWEL OR CHAMOIS.

3. COVER THE EDGES AND SURFACE OF THE APPLIQUE NAMEPLATE LETTERING AND CENTER EMBLEM WITH MASKING TAPE.

4. APPLY MASKING TAPE AS NECESSARY TO PROTECT THE EDGES OF THE SURROUNDING PAINT.

5. APPLY A SMALL AMOUNT OF MEGUIAR'S #17, OR EQUIVALENT, DIRECTLY ONTO THE APPLIQUE SURFACE.

6. USING A 90 DEGREE ROTARY POLISHER WITH SPEEDS IN THE 1,500 TO 2,000 RPM RANGE AND A MEGUIAR'S PART #W-9000 POLISHING PAD, OR EQUIVALENT, SPREAD THE MEGUIAR'S #17 EVENLY OVER THE APPLIQUE BEFORE BUFFING. WHEN BUFFING, KEEP PAD FLAT AND CONSTANTLY MOVING OVER THE APPLIQUE SURFACE. POLISH WITH HEAVIER PRESSURE APPLIED FOR 4-6 SECONDS, THEN POLISH WITH LIGHTER PRESSURE FOR 6-8 MORE SECONDS. AFTER BUFFING, INSPECT THE APPLIQUE SURFACE TO ENSURE THAT THE FINE OR LIGHT SCRATCHES OR ABRASIONS ARE COMPLETELY REMOVED. IF THEY ARE STILL PRESENT, REBUFF AS NEEDED. HAND WASH THE SURFACE WITH SOAP AND WATER USING A SOFT NON-SCRATCHING CLOTH.

7. HAND APPLY MEGUIAR'S #10, OR EQUIVALENT, AS THE LAST STEP USING A SOFT TOWEL TO WIPE OFF.

8. REMOVE MASKING TAPE.

9. WASH THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WITH SOAP AND WATER TO REMOVE ANY POLISHING RESIDUE OR MATERIAL.

10. DRY THE VEHICLE WITH A SOFT COTTON TOWEL OR CHAMOIS.

IMPORTANT: REMOVAL OF SCRATCHES OR ABRASIONS CAUSED BY NORMAL USE AND EXPOSURE ARE GENERALLY NOT COVERED BY THE NEW-VEHICLE WARRANTY.
