Exhaust Manifold Replacement Right Side

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air cleaner and duct.
  2. Drain the engine coolant.
  3. Remove the engine mount struts at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  4. Disconnect the upper radiator hose at the engine.
  5. Disconnect the tie straps from the heater outlet pipe and ignition wiring harness.
  6. Remove the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to SECTION 7A.
  7. Remove the heater pipe from the heater core to coolant pump.
  8. Remove the exhaust crossover heat shield and pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  9. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  10. Rotate the engine. Refer to Rotating the Engine for Service Access .
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.

  13. Remove the rear drivetrain and front suspension frame bolts.
  14. Lower the drivetrain and front suspension frame.
  15. Remove the exhaust pipe.
  16. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube from the rear exhaust manifold.
  17. Remove the oxygen sensor.
  18. Remove the automatic transaxle fluid filler tube. Move the filler tube aside. Refer to SECTION 7A.

  20. Remove the right exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  21. Remove the right exhaust upper and lower heat shields.

  22. Object Number: 54304  Size: SH
  23. Remove the right exhaust manifold nuts.
  24. Remove the right exhaust manifold.
  25. Remove the right exhaust manifold gasket.
  26. Clean the right exhaust manifold and cylinder head sealing surface.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 54304  Size: SH
  1. Install the right exhaust manifold gasket.
  2. Install the right exhaust manifold.
  3. Install the right exhaust manifold nuts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 16  N·m (12 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the right exhaust manifold upper and lower heat shields.
  6. Install the right exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  7. Install the automatic transaxle fluid filler tube. Refer to SECTION 7A.
  8. Install the oxygen sensor.
  9. Install the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube to the rear exhaust manifold.
  10. Install the exhaust pipe.

  12. Raise the drivetrain and front suspension frame.
  13. Install the rear drivetrain and front suspension bolts.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Rotate the engine. Refer to Rotating the Engine for Service Access .
  16. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  17. Install the exhaust crossover pipe and heat shield. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  18. Install the heater pipe from heater core to coolant pump.
  19. Install the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to SECTION 7A.
  20. Connect the tie straps around the heater outlet pipe and ignition wiring harness.
  21. Connect the upper radiator hose at the engine.
  22. Rotate the engine. Refer to Rotating the Engine for Service Access .
  23. Install the engine mount strut at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  24. Refill with engine coolant. Add two engine coolant sealant pellets, GM P/N 3634621, or equivalent.
  25. Install the air cleaner and duct.
  26. Bleed the engine coolant. Refer to SECTION 6B.

Exhaust Manifold Replacement Left Side

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air cleaner and duct.
  2. Drain the coolant.
  3. Remove the engine mount strut at the engine. Refer the Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  4. Rotate the engine. Refer to Rotating the Engine for Service Access .
  5. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to SECTION 6B.
  6. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  7. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the engine.
  8. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the engine.
  9. Disconnect the tie straps from the heater outlet pipe and ignition wiring harness.
  10. Remove the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to SECTION 7A.
  11. Disconnect the heater pipe from the heater core to coolant pump.

  13. Remove the exhaust crossover shield and pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  14. Remove the engine mount strut and air conditioning compressor bracket.

  15. Object Number: 54301  Size: SH
  16. Remove the left exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  17. Remove the heat shield.
  18. Remove the nuts.
  19. Remove the left exhaust manifold.
  20. Remove the left exhaust manifold gasket.
  21. Clean the exhaust manifold and cylinder head sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 54301  Size: SH
  1. Install the left exhaust manifold gasket.
  2. Install the left exhaust manifold.
  3. Install the left exhaust manifold nuts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 16  N·m (12 lb ft).

  5. Install the left exhaust manifold heat shield.
  6. Install the left exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10  N·m (89 lb in).

  8. Install the engine mount strut and air conditioning compressor bracket.

  10. Install the exhaust crossover pipe and shield. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  11. Connect the heater pipe from heater core to coolant pump.
  12. Install the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to SECTION 7A.
  13. Connect the tie straps around the heater outlet pipe and ignition wiring harness.
  14. Connect the lower radiator hose to the engine.
  15. Connect the upper radiator hose to the engine.
  16. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  17. Install the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to SECTION 6B.
  18. Rotate the engine. Refer to Rotating the Engine for Service Access .
  19. Install the engine mount struts at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  20. Refill the engine coolant. Add two engine coolant sealant pellets, GM P/N 3634621, or equivalent.
  21. Install the air cleaner and duct.
  22. Bleed the cooling system. Refer to SECTION 6B.
