Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  2. Remove the hood panel. Refer to Body Front End.
  3. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  4. Remove the air cleaner and duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  5. Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  6. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  8. Drain the engine oil.
  9. Remove the front exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust System.
  10. Remove the front exhaust manifold pipe heat shield. Refer to Exhaust System.
  11. Remove the lower rear transaxle bolt. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  12. Disconnect the electrical connector from the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  13. Remove the engine mount frame side nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  14. Remove the flywheel inspection cover. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  15. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  16. Remove the torque converter bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  17. Remove the transaxle mount. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Remove the coolant reservoir recovery. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  20. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  21. Remove the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable from the throttle body. Refer to Engine Controls.
  22. Remove the accelerator control cable bracket and move the cable aside. Refer to Engine Controls.
  23. Remove the power brake booster vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold. Refer to Vacuum Booster System.
  24. Remove the plastic cover from the shock tower.
  25. Remove the generator front and rear braces. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  26. Remove the generator. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  27. Remove the fuel feed and return pipe. Refer to Engine Fuel.
  28. Disconnect the tie straps around the ignition wiring harness and the engine mount strut and the A/C compressor bracket.
  29. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  30. Remove the power steering pump and set aside. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  31. Disconnect the heater outlet and inlet hose. Refer to HVAC.
  32. Disconnect the upper radiator hose from the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  33. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  34. Remove the engine mount strut and A/C compressor bracket bolts and move the compressor aside.
  35. Remove the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  36. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the following sensors:
  37. • The knock sensor
    • The heated oxygen sensor
    • The engine coolant temperature sensor
    • The camshaft position sensor
    • The crankshaft position sensor
    • The wheel speed sensor
  38. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coil. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  39. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the idle air control valve and throttle position sensor.
  40. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold.
  41. Remove the transaxle bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  42. Install the safety bolt between the generator bracket and the engine lift bracket.
  43. Suitably support the transaxle with floor stands.
  44. Attach the engine lifting device.
  45. Remove the engine from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine to the vehicle.
  2. Remove the engine lifting device.
  3. Remove the floor stands from the transaxle.
  4. Remove the safety bolt from the generator bracket and the front engine lift bracket.
  5. Install the transaxle bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  6. Connect the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold.
  7. Connect the electrical connectors from the idle air control valve and throttle position sensor.
  8. Connect the electrical connectors from the ignition coil.
  9. Connect electrical connectors from the following sensors:
  10. • The knock sensor
    • The heated oxygen sensor
    • The engine coolant temperature sensor
    • The camshaft position sensor
    • The crankshaft position sensor
    • The wheel speed sensor
  11. Install the automatic transaxle vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  12. Position the engine mount strut and A/C compressor bracket bolts and move the compressor aside.
  13. Connect the lower radiator hose from the water pump. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  14. Connect the upper radiator hose from the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  15. Install the heater outlet and inlet hose. Refer to HVAC
  16. Position the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  17. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  18. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  19. Install the tie straps around the ignition wiring harness and the engine mount strut and the A/C compressor bracket.
  20. Install the fuel feed and return pipe. Refer to Engine Fuel.
  21. Install the generator. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  22. Install the generator front and rear braces. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  23. Position the accelerator control cable.
  24. Install the accelerator control cable bracket. Refer to Engine Controls.
  25. Install the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable from the throttle body. Refer to Engine Controls.
  26. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  27. Install the coolant recovery reservoir . Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  28. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  29. Install the transaxle mount to the engine block. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  30. Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  31. Install the starter motor. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  32. Install the flywheel inspection cover. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  33. Install the engine mount frame side nuts to the drivetrain and front suspension. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  34. Connect the electrical connector from the vehicle speed sensor. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  35. Install the lower rear transaxle bolt. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  36. Install the front exhaust manifold pipe heat shield. Refer to Exhaust System.
  37. Install the front exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Exhaust System.
  38. Lower the vehicle.
  39. Fill the with engine oil.
  40. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  41. Install the transaxle fluid filler tube. Refer to Automatic Transaxle.
  42. Install the air cleaner and duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  43. Install the hood panel. Refer to Body Front End.
  44. Fill with engine coolant and add two engine coolant sealant pellets, GM P/N 3634621 or equivalent.
  45. Bleed the coolant system. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
