For 1990-2009 cars only
  1. Clean any sludge or carbon from the crankshaft.
  2. Probe the crankshaft oil passages for any obstructions.
  3. Inspect the keyway.
  4. Inspect the crankshaft threads.
  5. Important: Replace the crankshaft if any severe gouges or burned spots exist. Remove any slight roughness with a fine polishing cloth soaked in clean engine oil. Remove any slight burrs with a fine oil stone.

  6. Inspect the bearing journals and the thrust surfaces for the following conditions:
  7. • Cracks
    • Chips
    • Roughness
    • Grooves
    • Discoloration
  8. Inspect the bearing inserts for any foreign material. Determine the source of any foreign material that is found.

  9. Object Number: 4979  Size: SH
  10. Measure the amount of crankshaft journal taper and run-out with a micrometer.
  11. Note the reading results.
  12. Check to make sure that the taper and run-out readings are within specifications.
  13. Replace the crankshaft if the taper and run-out readings are not within specifications.
  14. Check the location of main bearing high spots. Replace the crankshaft if the main bearing high spots are not in line.
