- Clean any sludge or carbon from the crankshaft.
- Probe the crankshaft oil passages for any obstructions.
- Inspect the keyway.
- Inspect the crankshaft threads.
Important: Replace the crankshaft if any severe gouges or burned spots exist. Remove
any slight roughness with a fine polishing cloth soaked in clean engine oil.
Remove any slight burrs with a fine oil stone.
- Inspect the bearing journals and the thrust surfaces for the following
conditions:
- Inspect the bearing inserts for any foreign material. Determine
the source of any foreign material that is found.
- Measure the amount of crankshaft journal
taper and run-out with a micrometer.
- Note the reading results.
- Check to make sure that the taper and run-out readings are within
specifications.
- Replace the crankshaft if the taper and run-out readings are not
within specifications.
- Check the location of main bearing high spots. Replace the crankshaft
if the main bearing high spots are not in line.
