Removal Procedure

Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion steering gear stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear or to the intermediate shaft. This damage may cause loss of steering control, which could result in an accident and possible personal injury.

Tools Required:

  1. J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
  2. J 28467-90 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
  3. J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg
  1. Inspect the washers on the bolts when the following procedures must be done:
  2. 1.1. Side case cover removal
    1.2. Oil pan removal
  3. If the washer is inverted, do the following:
  4. 2.1. Install a new bolt.
    2.2. Install a new washer.
  1. Remove the air cleaner.
  2. Remove the crossover pipe.
  3. • For the 3.1L engine, refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Exhaust System.
    • For the 3.4L engine, refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Exhaust System.
    • For the 3.8L engine, refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Exhaust System.
  4. Remove the shift cable clip at the following locations:
  5. 3.1. The lever
    3.2. The mount bracket.
  6. Install J 28467-360 , J 28467-90 , and J 36462 .
  7. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  8. Remove the left front wheel. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Remove the left inner fender splash shield.
  10. Remove the transaxle mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  11. Loosen the engine mount nuts at the frame.
  12. • For the 3.1L and 3.4L engines, refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
    • For the 3.4L VIN X engine, refer to Engine Mount Replacement and Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
    • For the 3.8L engine, refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

  13. Remove the pinch bolt at the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Power Rack and Pinion in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  14. Remove the ball joints at the steering knuckle. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
  15. Support the right and the left frame sides with jackstands.
  16. Refer to Frame in Body Dimensions, Frame and Underbody in order to remove the left side frame to body bolts.
  17. Loosen the right side frame to body bolts.
  18. Refer to Power Rack and Pinion in Power Steering Gear and Pump in order to remove the left side steering rack bolt.
  19. Disconnect the wiring harness.
  20. Remove the left drive axle. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
  21. Remove the transaxle mount bracket. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .

  23. Position the drain pan under the transmission.
  24. Remove the bolts.
  25. Remove the nuts.

  26. Object Number: 99903  Size: SH
  27. Remove the case side cover pan.
  28. Remove the gasket.
  29. Clean the case.
  30. Clean the side cover gasket surfaces.

Installation Procedure

  1. J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
  2. J 28467-90 Engine Support Fixture Adapters
  3. J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg

  1. Install the case side cover pan.
  2. Install the gasket.
  3. Install the bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the nuts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  7. Install the transaxle mount bracket. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  8. Install the left drive axle. Refer to Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
  9. Connect the wiring harness.
  10. Refer to Power Rack and Pinion in Power Steering Gear and Pump in order to install the left side steering rack bolt.
  11. Refer to Frame in Body Dimensions, Frame and Underbody in order to install the frame to body bolt.
  12. Remove the support from the frame.
  13. Notice: When installing the intermediate shaft be sure that the shaft is seated prior to pinch bolt installation. If the pinch bolt is inserted into the coupling before shaft installation, the two matching shafts may disengage.

  14. Install the ball joints at the steering knuckle. Refer to Ball Joint in Front Suspension.
  15. Install the pinch bolts at the intermediate steering shaft. Refer to Power Rack and Pinion in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  16. Install the engine mount at the frame.
  17. • For the 3.1L and 3.4L engines, refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
    • For the 3.4L VIN X engine, refer to Engine Mount Replacement and Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
    • For the 3.8L engine, refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  18. Install the transaxle mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  19. Install the left inner fender splash shield.
  20. Remove the left front wheel. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Remove the J 28467-360 , J 28467-90 , and J 36462 .
  23. Install the shift cable clip at the following components:
  24. 19.1. The lever
    19.2. The mount bracket.
  25. Remove the crossover pipe.
  26. • For the 3.1L engine, refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Exhaust System.
    • For the 3.4L engine, refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Exhaust System.
    • For the 3.8L engine, refer to Exhaust Crossover Pipe Replacement in Exhaust System.
  27. Remove the air cleaner.
