Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  2. Remove the hood panel. Refer to Hood Replacement
  3. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct and the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Remove the washer reservoir bolts and retainers.
  5. Remove the underhood accessory wiring junction block. Reposition the junction block.
  6. Remove the washer reservoir.
  7. Remove the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement and Engine Mount Strut Replacement
  8. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement
  9. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the following:
  10. • The camshaft position sensor
    • The manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor
    • The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
    • The evaporative emissions canister purge solenoid valve
    • The throttle position (TP) sensor
    • The idle air control (IAC) valve
    • The generator
    • The ignition coil
    • The wiring harness grounds
    • The two body wiring harness-to-engine harness connectors
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  12. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling
  13. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement and Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
  14. Remove the oil filter.
  15. Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the following:
  16. • The knock sensor
    • The heated oxygen sensor
    • The crankshaft position sensor
    • The starter motor
    • The A/C compressor
    • The wiring harness grounds
  17. Remove the exhaust manifold pipe from the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement
  18. Remove the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement
  19. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement
  20. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement
  21. Remove the A/C compressor bolts. Suitably support the compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement
  22. Remove the torque converter bolts.
  23. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement
  24. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement
  25. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Transmission Brace Replacement

  26. Object Number: 160967  Size: SH
  27. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
  28. Lower the vehicle.
  29. Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.

    In order to avoid cruise control cable damage, position the cable out of the way while you remove or install the engine. Do not pry or lean against the cruise control cable and do not kink the cable. You must replace a damaged cable.

  30. Disconnect the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable from the throttle body and the cable bracket. Refer to Accelerator Controls Cable Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  31. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold.
  32. Disconnect the power brake booster vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold. Refer to Vacuum Brake Booster Hose Replacement
  33. Disconnect the fuel feed and return hoses. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Filter to Engine
  34. Disconnect the heater outlet and inlet hoses from the engine.
  35. Remove the power steering hoses from the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement
  36. Remove the power steering pump and set aside. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement
  37. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement
  38. Install the engine lifting device.
  39. Remove the remaining transaxle-to-engine bolts.
  40. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
  41. Remove the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement
  42. Install the engine to the engine stand.
  43. Remove the generator and the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement
  44. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
  45. Remove the ignition control module. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the ignition control module. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement
  2. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement
  3. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement
  4. Install the generator and the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement
  5. Remove the engine from the engine stand.
  6. Install the flywheel. Refer to Engine Flywheel Replacement
  7. Install the engine to the vehicle.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  9. Install the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4 and 5) and stud (2) to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  11. Remove the engine lifting device.
  12. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement
  13. Install the power steering hoses. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement
  14. Install the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement
  15. Install the heater outlet and inlet hoses to the engine.
  16. Install the fuel feed and return hoses. Refer to Fuel Hose/Pipes Replacement - Filter to Engine
  17. Install the power brake booster vacuum hose to the upper intake manifold. Refer to Vacuum Brake Booster Hose Replacement
  18. Install the vacuum hoses from the upper intake manifold.
  19. Caution: In order to avoid possible injury or vehicle damage, always replace the accelerator control cable with a NEW cable whenever you remove the engine from the vehicle.

  20. Install the accelerator control and cruise control servo cable to the cable bracket and the throttle body. Refer to Accelerator Control Cable Bracket Replacement
  21. Connect electrical harness connectors to the following:
  22. • The camshaft position sensor
    • The manifold air pressure (MAP) sensor
    • The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
    • The evaporative emissions canister purge solenoid valve
    • The throttle position (TP) sensor
    • The idle air control (IAC) valve
    • The generator
    • The ignition coil
    • The wiring harness grounds
    • The two body wiring harness-to-engine harness connectors
  23. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
  24. Install the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement

  26. Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1).
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the upper transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and stud (1) to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  28. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Transmission Brace Replacement
  29. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement
  30. Install the torque converter bolts.
  31. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement
  32. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement
  33. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement
  34. Install the engine mount lower nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement
  35. Install the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement
  36. Install the oil filter. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
  37. Connect electrical harness connectors to the following:
  38. • The knock sensor
    • The heated oxygen sensor
    • The crankshaft position sensor
    • The starter motor
    • The A/C compressor
    • The wiring harness grounds
  39. Lower the vehicle.
  40. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement
  41. Install the engine mount struts. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement and/or Engine Mount Strut Replacement
  42. Install the hood panel. Refer to Hood Replacement
  43. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
  44. Return the washer reservoir to the proper position.
  45. Install the underhood accessory wiring junction block.
  46. Install the washer reservoir bolts and retainers.
  47. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  48. Fill the engine with engine with oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
  49. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling
  50. Fill the power steering system. Refer to Refilling the Power Steering System
  51. Check for leaks.
