J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gage

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tires and the wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the brake drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  4. Ensure the stops on both of the parking brake levers are against the edges of the webs on the park brake shoes. If the parking brake cable is holding the stops off the edge of the shoe webs, loosen the parking brake cable adjustment.
  5. Use a J 21177-A in order to measure the drum inside diameter.
  6. Adjust the turning star wheel on the adjusting screw. Adjust the shoe and lining diameter to 1.27 mm (0.05 in) less than the drum inside diameter at each wheel.
  7. Install the brake drums. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  8. Install the tires and the wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Apply and release the brake pedal 30 to 35 times with a one second pause between each brake application.
  10. Inspect for brake drag and improper parking brake function.
  11. Lower the vehicle.
