Hissing noise when the following conditions exist:

If the noise is very objectionable, replace the service gear (a replacement gear will also have a slight noise, and is not always a cure for the condition).

Noise heard after a power steering system fluid level check

1. Operate the vehicle at idle.
2. Ensure that the engine has reached operating temperature.
3. Listen for the noise.

Loose intermediate shaft seal at the column

1. Service the intermediate shaft seal at the column if necessary. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
2. Replace the intermediate shaft seal at the column if necessary. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .

Loose intermediate shaft seal at the gear

1. Service the intermediate shaft seal at the gear if necessary. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
2. Replace the intermediate shaft seal at the gear if necessary. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
