The keyless entry system allows the driver to complete the following functions from outside of the vehicle using a hand held radio transmitter:
• | Unlock the door locks |
• | Lock the door locks |
• | Release the rear compartment lid |
The courtesy lights activate automatically when any of these functions are used. This feature is called illuminated entry.
The transmitter operates in the UHF band. The transmitter sends digitally coded signals to the remote control door lock receiver (RCDLR). The RCDLR completes the following functions:
• | Detects the signals |
• | Decodes the signals |
• | Issues signals to control the following components: |
- | The door lock actuators |
- | The rear compartment lid release actuator |
- | The courtesy lights |
The keyless entry system can be programmed with as many as four keyless entry transmitters.
The power door locks, the rear compartment lid release and the courtesy lights can also be operated by hand. For example, the power door locks will respond to the door lock switches.
When pressing the LOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter, the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) receives a signal with a valid Vehicle Access Code (VAC). Then, the RCDLR locks all the doors. In addition, the headlamp switch receives a lock signal through circuit 49 turning ON the courtesy lights for two seconds. This serves to indicate that the doors have been locked.
The RCDLR supplies voltage to the coil of the door lock relay. The door lock relay is energized and voltage is supplied to the door lock actuators. Ground for the driver's door lock actuator is provided by RCDLR circuit 694 through internal contacts. Ground for the other door lock actuator(s) is provided through the contacts of the unlock relay of the door lock relay. All door lock actuators run to lock all doors.
The unlock function is separated into two operations depending on how the UNLOCK button is pressed on the keyless entry transmitter.
• | When the UNLOCK button is pressed once only the driver's side door lock is unlocked. |
• | When the UNLOCK button is pressed again within five seconds all doors will be unlocked. |
When the UNLOCK button is pressed once on the keyless entry transmitter and the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) receives a signal with a valid Vehicle Access Code (VAC), the unlock function sequence is performed. The RCDLR will supply voltage to the driver's door lock actuator through circuit 694. The actuator is grounded through the contacts of the door lock relay in the door lock relay. The driver's door lock actuator runs to unlock the driver's side door.
If the UNLOCK button on the transmitter is pressed twice to unlock all doors, the RCDLR will activate the door unlock output at circuit 194. The RCDLR will then supply voltage to the coil of the unlock relay in the door lock relay. The unlock relay is energized and closes its contacts. Voltage is supplied to all door lock actuators except the driver's side door. The actuators are grounded through the contacts of the door lock relay. The actuators run to unlock the doors.
When pressing the rear compartment release button on the keyless entry transmitter, the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) receives a signal with a valid Vehicle Access Code (VAC).
Then, the RCDLR supplies voltage to circuit 382/56. This voltage is then applied to the rear compartment lid lock release actuator. The rear compartment lid lock release actuator is energized opening the rear compartment lid.
If the ignition switch is in RUN position and the transaxle is shifted out of PARK, voltage is not supplied to the RCDLR circuit 275. This action prevents the rear compartment lid release from activating while the transaxle is shifted out of PARK.
When pressing the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter (unlocking the driver's door only), the interior courtesy lights turn on for 40 (+/- 4) seconds. The courtesy lights turn off if the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position within the 40 (+/- 4) second time frame. At the end of time frame cycle, the headlamp switch activates the sustained interior lighting feature. The headlamp switch keeps the courtesy lights on for another 16 seconds, then gradually dimming them off. The sustained interior lighting is canceled when the turning the ignition switch to the RUN or START position, turning off the courtesy lights.
When pressing the UNLOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter a second time within five seconds of the first UNLOCK press (unlocking all doors), the courtesy lights stay on for 40 (+/- 4) seconds.
When pressing the LOCK button on the keyless entry transmitter (locking all doors), the courtesy lights turn on for two seconds. The courtesy lights turn off if the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position within the 2 second time frame.
When pressing the rear compartment release button on the keyless entry, the courtesy lights turn on for 40 (+/- 4) seconds.
Perform this procedure when:
• | A keyless entry transmitter is malfunctioning. |
• | Before programming a keyless entry transmitter. |
• | After replacing the batteries on the keyless entry transmitter. |
To resynchronize the transmitter:
Perform this procedure when:
• | The RKE programming connector (BLK/WHT wire) is grounded (circuit 1455). |
• | The Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) is replaced. |
• | A keyless remote transmitter is replaced. |
• | A second (up to a total of four) remote keyless entry transmitter is added. |
Important: If the vehicle has more than one remote keyless entry transmitter, all keyless entry transmitters have to be programmed during the same programming sequence. Otherwise, the keyless entry transmitters that were not programmed will not work properly.
• | Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously on the keyless entry transmitter for 10 seconds. |
• | The door locks will lock and unlock, indicating that the keyless entry transmitter has been programmed. |
• | Repeat step 4 for each keyless entry transmitter to be programmed. Up to four keyless entry transmitters can be programmed. |
