Use the following procedure when you install a new theft
deterrent module. New theft deterrent modules are unprogrammed.
When you replace a theft deterrent module, program it to accept the
resistance value of the existing vehicle keys in order to allow PASS-Key® II
operation. Otherwise, the theft deterrent system will not operate correctly.
A new service replacement theft deterrent module is programmed to store
the first resistor pellet code that it detects.
Important: On Special Equipment Option (SEO) vehicles only (RPO: 9C3, 9C6), leave
the theft deterrent module unprogrammed because the ignition key does not
have a resistor pellet. Refer to
Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) Description
and to
Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) System Check
.
Important: Before connecting the J 35628-A
to the ignition lock cylinder circuit, verify the customer's
ignition key resistor pellet code. Set the same ignition key resistor pellet
code into the J 35628-A
by using the key code knob. This will prevent programming a new theft deterrent
module with an undesired ignition key resistor pellet code.
- Install the new, unprogrammed theft deterrent module.
- Insert one of the customer's ignition keys into the ignition lock
cylinder.
- Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position.
- Start the engine in order to verify that the system operates correctly.
- Observe if the SECURITY indicator lamp:
• | If the lamp turns ON for about 5 seconds and then turns
OFF, the programming of the new theft deterrent module is successfully completed. |
• | If the lamp flashes at a rate of 1 flash per second (or until
the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position) and the engine starts,
the programming is not complete. The new theft deterrent module did not
store the resistor pellet code. |
• | Inspect for the following conditions before you repeat the programing
procedure: |
- | The theft deterrent module connector has poor terminal contact. |
- | The ignition lock cylinder circuits have opens, shorts to battery,
or shorts to ground |
- | The resistor sensing contacts are faulty. |
- | The ignition key resistor pellet is faulty. |
