For 1990-2009 cars only
The rearview mirror is attached to a rearview mirror support that is bonded to the windshield. This rearview mirror support is installed by the windshield supplier using a plastic-polyvinyl butyl adhesive.
Use the following items in order to install a detached rearview mirror support or a new rearview mirror:
| • | Loctite® Minute-Bond Adhesive 312 two component pack P/N 1052369 or equivalent |
| • | The original factory installed rearview mirror support (prepared per steps 4 and 5 of the Installation Procedure) or replacement rearview mirror support |
| • | A wax marking pencil or crayon |
| • | Isopropyl alcohol |
| • | A clean paper towel |
| • | A fine grit emery cloth or sandpaper (320 or 360) |
Installation Procedure
- Measure from the top of the windshield to the top of the rearview mirror support (2) in order to determine the rearview mirror support position on the windshield.
- Mark the location on the outside of the windshield with a wax pencil or crayon.
- Use GM Glass Cleaner GM P/N 1050427 or polishing compound on a paper towel on the inside of the windshield surface in order to clean the large circle. Rub until the area is completely clean and dry. Allow to air dry.
- When dry, clean the area with an isopropyl alcohol saturated paper towel in order to remove any traces of scouring powder or cleaning solution.
- With a piece of fine grit (320 or 360) emery cloth or sandpaper, sand the bonding surface of the new rearview mirror support or the original factory installed rearview mirror support.
- Wipe the sanded rearview mirror support with a clean paper towel saturated with isopropyl alcohol. Allow to dry.
- Follow the directions on the manufacturer's kit in order to prepare the rearview mirror support prior to installation on the windshield.
- Properly position the rearview mirror support to the premarked location. With the rounded end pointed upward, press the rearview mirror support against the windshield for 30-60 seconds exerting steady pressure against the windshield.
- Reinstall the rearview mirror. Refer to Inside Rearview Mirror Replacement .
Draw a larger diameter circle (3) around the rearview mirror support circle on the outside windshield surface.
Important: If the original factory installed rearview mirror support is to be reused, all traces of factory installed adhesive must be removed prior to reinstallation.
After 5 minutes any excess adhesive may be removed with an isopropyl alcohol moistened paper towel or window cleaning solution.
