POWER STEERING SHUDDER REPLACE OUTLET HOSE/PIPE ASSY

SUBJECT: POWER STEERING SHUDDER

MODEL and YEAR: 1992 LUMINA APV WITH 3.8L ENGINE

Some 1992 U-vans with 3.8L V-6 engine (RPO L27) may exhibit a slight power steering shudder condition noted during static or low speed turning maneuvers. This condition may be perceived by the vehicle operator as a disturbance felt and heard through the body structure and steering wheel.

Cause:

------ A combination of power steering pump pressure pulses and engine firing frequency generating a disturbance through the body structure.

NOTE: To insure proper system operation, the bleeding procedure indicated in applicable Service Manual Section 3B, Power Steering Gear and Pump must be followed.

Correction:

----------- Replace the existing power steering outlet hose/pipe assembly (steering gear to cooler pipe) with new assembly, P/N 26037593, following service procedure indicated below. New assembly contains internal tuning cable and is approximately 16 inches longer and requires a unique routing/retention method as shown in illustration.

Service Procedure:

1. Raise vehicle. Refer to General Information (Section 0A) of applicable Service Manual.

2. Remove two (2) screws, retaining power steering gear heat shield and remove heat shield.

3. Remove power steering gear pipe clip.

4. Loosen power steering outlet hose to cooler pipe clamp, disconnect hose from pipe and drain.

5. Disconnect outlet hose at power steering gear and remove from vehicle.

6. Position new outlet hose, P/N 26037593, in vehicle and connect at steering gear.

7. Install power steering gear pipe clip and torque outlet hose fitting at steering gear to 27 N.m (20 Lb.Ft.).

8. Install cooler pipe clamp on outlet hose, loop hose as shown in Illustration and connect to cooler pipe.

9. Torque outlet hose cooler pipe clamp to 1.7 N.m (15 LB.IN.).

10. Remove case extension bolt/screw, install new clip, P/N 10170265, on outlet hose as shown in illustration, insert bolt through clip and reinstall bolt/screw torquing it to 36 N.m (27 Lb.Ft.).

11. Install new strap, P/N 11 509088, around cooler pipes and outlet hose as shown in Illustration.

12. Install power steering gear heat shield and secure, torquing screws to 8 N.m (6 LB.FT.).

13. Lower vehicle.

14. Add fluid and bleed power steering system.
