SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE-SEC. 8A PASSIVE KEYLESS ENTRY/SEC. SYS

Subject: PASSIVE KEYLESS ENTRY / SECURITY SYSTEM

Model and Year: 1993 LUMINA APV

A number of Chevrolet Lumina APVs built for fleet use are equipped with a Passive Keyless Entry/Security System. Vehicles equipped with this option can be identified by checking the Service Parts Identification Label located in the glove box. An RPO code of UY6 on the Service Parts Identification Label indicates that the vehicle is equipped with the Passive Keyless Entry/Security System.

The Passive Keyless Entry/Security System will lock all of the doors and arm the alarm by simply walking away from the vehicle while carrying the key FOB (transmitter). No pressing of buttons or remembering to set the alarm is required.

SPECIFIC SYSTEM FUNCTIONS:

To Lock and Arm the system:

- Close all of the doors. - Walk away from the vehicle while carrying the key FOB (transmitter). All of the doors will lock and the horn will "chirp" to confirm that the vehicle is locked and armed.

To Unlock and Disarm the system:

- Lock the vehicle as described under "To Lock and Arm the System" above. - Walk up to any door or the tailgate while carrying the key FOB (transmitter). The doors will unlock and the alarm is simultaneously disarmed.

To Disable an Active Alarm Signal (horn sounding and headlights flashing), use either of the following two methods:

1. Bring the key FOB (transmitter) within range of the vehicle OR 2. Insert the door key into the driver's door lock and rotate the lock cylinder into the UNLOCK position.

To Test the System: - Open the driver's door window and lock the vehicle as described under "To Lock and Arm the System" above. - Leave the key FOB (transmitter) at least 15 feet from the vehicle.

You can now use either of the following two methods to test the system:

1. Walk up to the vehicle, reach through the open driver's window, manually slide the door lock button up to the UNLOCK position and open the door. OR 2. Walk up to the vehicle, reach through the open driver's window, insert the key into the ignition cylinder and turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.

After using either of the two methods above, the alarm should activate immediately with the horn sounding and the headlights flashing. (In addition to sounding the horn and flashing the headlights, this system also disables the starter motor.)

Deactivate the alarm by bringing the key FOB (transmitter) within range of the vehicle.

BASIC SYSTEM OPERATIONS:

The Passive Keyless Entry/Security System is shipped from the assembly plant in the OFF mode with two key FOBs (transmitters) in the glove box.

To Turn the system ON: - Move the key FOB (transmitter) within range of the vehicle. - Press the key FOB (transmitter) button for approximately 20 seconds or until the door locks "toggle" (cycle) through one locking and unlocking movement. (The up and down movement of the front door manual door lock buttons can be observed to confirm that the "toggle" (cycle) occurs.) - Release the key FOB (transmitter) button. The system is now ON and will function as was described above in SPECIFIC SYSTEM FUNCTIONS.

To Turn the system OFF: - Move the key FOB (transmitter) within range of the vehicle. - Press the key FOB (transmitter) button for approximately 20 seconds or until the door locks "toggle" (cycle) through one locking and unlocking movement. (The up and down movement of the front door manual door lock buttons can be observed to confirm that the "toggle" (cycle) occurs.) The system is now OFF and will not arm the alarm, lock the doors or disable the starter motor.

To Replace the Battery: - Remove the key FOB (transmitter) from the key ring. - Pry off the key FOB (transmitter) cover. - Replace the original battery with one of the following replacement battery types: Sanyo* (CR2450 3 Volt) Radio Shack* (CLB - CR 2450) - Snap the key FOB (transmitter) cover securely back into place.

SPECIAL SYSTEM FEATURES:

Added Rear Tailgate Security

The rear tailgate will not unlock when the door locks are locked and then unlocked using the power door lock buttons. This feature is provided for commercial use when an interior partition is used to secure the cargo area. Theft of valuables from the rear cargo area, therefore, cannot take place (after forced entry to the front) with attempted unlocking of the tailgate with the power door lock buttons. Only the key and the Passive Keyless Entry/ Security System unlocking methods will unlock the tailgate.

"Sleeping" Key FOB (Transmitter)

In order to provide maximum battery life, the key FOB (transmitter) has been designed with a "sleep" mode. The key FOB (transmitter) will stop transmitting its signal whenever it is motionless for approximately 15-20 seconds. At times, a noticeable "thunk" type noise may be heard when the key FOB (transmitter) is moved after it has been sitting motionless within range of the vehicle. This is the normal action of the power door locks unlocking and is evidence that the key FOB (transmitter) has "awakened".
