Removal Procedure

Notice: Use J 36850 or equivalent during assembly in order to retain checkballs or to lubricate components. Lubricants other than the recommended assembly lube changes the transmission fluid characteristics and causes undesirable shift conditions or filter clogging.

Notice: Do not overfill the transmission. Overfilling will result in foaming, loss of fluid, and possible damage to the transmission.

When service requires the removal of the case side cover and/or bottom oil pan, the washers on the bolts must be inspected. A new bolt and washer assembly should be installed if the washer is inverted.

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  2. Place the drain pan under the transaxle bottom oil pan.

  3. Object Number: 97331 Size: SH
  4. Remove the oil pan bolts/screws from the front and the sides.
  5. Notice: When removing the oil pan bolts, be careful not to damage the oil pan sealing surfaces. Such damage may result in oil leaks in this area.

  6. Loosen the rear oil pan bolts/screws approximately four turns. Care must be taken not to damage mating surfaces of oil pan and case. Such damage may result in oil leaks in this area.
  7. Lightly tap the oil pan with the rubber mallet.
  8. Pry the oil pan loose with a screwdriver and allow fluid to drain.
  9. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts/screws.

  10. Object Number: 97332 Size: SH
  11. Remove the oil pan.

  12. Object Number: 97333 Size: SH
  13. Remove the gasket.
  14. Inspection
Inspect the oil pan and the filter screen for foreign material for the following items:

     - Metal particles
     - Clutch facing material
     - Rubber particles
     - Engine coolant
  15. Determine and correct the source of contamination.

  16. Object Number: 99077 Size: SH
  17. Inspect the oil pan flange for distortion.
  18. Straighten the oil pan flange if necessary.
  19. Clean the case and the oil pan gasket surfaces with solvent and air dry.
  20. Notice: If the case and oil pan flanges are not dry and free of any oil film, leakage may result.

  21. Clean all traces of the old gasket materials.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 97333 Size: SH
  1. Install the oil gasket.

  2. Object Number: 97331 Size: SH
  3. Install the oil pan.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the bolts/screws to 11 N·m(97 lb in).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Fill the transaxle with the proper quantity of Dexron-III.
  7. Place the gear selector in PARK.
  8. Start engine and run at slow idle. Do not race the engine.
  9. Adjust fluid level.
  10. Inspection

    • Inspect the proper completion of repairs.
    • Inspect the proper fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check .
    • Inspect the fluid leaks. Refer to Fluid Leak Diagnosis and Repair .
