V8 Engine Number Prefix

Revisions to engine specifications have resulted in possible confusion in determining the specification of 5.7L and 6.0L engines in 2005-2007 Lumina models.

Change from 5.7L LS1 to a 6.0L L76 occurred at start of the 2006 model year (VZ). With introduction of VE model sedans (2007 model year), the 6.0L engine specification changed from L76 to L98. This change carried over shortly after this date, to 2006 model year (VZ ) ute and station wagon models which have continued in production.

Before attempting repairs or replacements on V8 engines in ute or station wagon models, identify the engine specification. The most accurate means of identifying the engine specification is from the engine number prefix. Refer to the table below.
