Diagnostic Instructions
DTC Descriptor
DTC B0983 00: Security System (non-telltale) Indicator
2 Circuit
Circuit/System Description
The security system indicator is located in the instrument panel cluster. The
security system indicator supplies voltage the body control module (BCM). The BCM
supplies a ground to the security system light circuit which illuminates the security
system light when the system is activated, the circuit is hard wire to the BCM.
Conditions for Running the DTC
• | System voltage is between 9-16 volts. |
• | Ignition switch is in the ON position. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
DTC B0983 will set when the BCM detects an open/high resistance or short to
voltage in the security system indicator circuit.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
The BCM will set the DTC as current.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
• | The condition for setting the DTC is no longer present. |
• | The DTC can be cleared using a scan tool. |

Circuit/System Testing
- Verify that no other DTCs are set.
- Disconnect the BCM harness connector. Connect a test light between a known
ground and the signal circuit of the wiring harness.
⇒ | If the test light does not illuminate check the signal circuit for an open/high
resistance or short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the IPC. |
- Reconnect the BCM harness connector.
- Operate the central locking while observing the security system indicator.
⇒ | The security system indicator should illuminate and deactivate with the central
locking. If the security light does not change state when activating the central locking,
replace the BCM. |
