Battery Protection and Need for Ignition Key Removal

The electrical architecture of the 2007 model year Lumina and Caprice includes many features which are operational while the ignition key remains in the ignition switch, even with the ignition switch in the OFF position. Each of these features utilizes a small amount of electrical current, which will combine to discharge the battery if left for significant time (over several weeks).

Vehicles should not be left for significant time with keys in the ignition switch. This includes both periods when the vehicle is in storage prior to delivery, or during prolonged periods when the vehicle is not attended while in customer ownership.

Dealers should alert PDI and storage yards that ignition keys must be removed from the ignition switch whenever vehicles are left for a prolonged period.

Dealers should also notify your vehicle sales staff to advise owners to remove the ignition key from the ignition when the vehicle is to be left parked for prolonged periods.

Again, review normal new vehicle storage practices with your personnel to ensure that GM guidelines are being followed. Battery damage will result if batteries are allowed to discharge.
