Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement 24X

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the serpentine drive belt from crankshaft pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  3. Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

  4. Raise the vehicle on hoist.
  5. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer retaining bolt.
  6. Remove the crankshaft harmonic balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  7. Note the routing of sensor harness before removal.
  8. Remove the harness retaining clip with bolt (1).
  9. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  10. Remove the sensor bolts (2).
  11. Remove the sensor.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the 24X Crankshaft Position Sensor with bolts (2) and route harness as noted during removal.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the harness retaining clip with bolt (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (8 lb ft).

  5. Connect the sensor electrical connector.
  6. Reinstall the balancer on the crankshaft. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  7. Apply thread sealer GM #1052080 or equivalent to threads of the crankshaft harmonic balancer bolt.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 150 N·m  (110 lb ft).

  9. Lower vehicle.
  10. Reinstall the serpentine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.

  12. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement 7X

Removal Procedure

  1. Turn OFF the ignition switch.
  2. Turn the steering wheel fully to the left.
  3. Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.

  4. Raise the vehicle.
  5. Disconnect the sensor electrical connector.
  6. Remove the attaching Bolt/screw.
  7. Remove the sensor from engine.
  8. Inspect for wear, cracks, or leakage if the sensor is not being replaced.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the sensor to the block.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the bolt to hold sensor to block face.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  5. Connect the electrical connector.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
