Caution: Brake fluid may be irritating to the skin or the eyes, or may cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea if swallowed. In case of contact or swallowing take the following actions:

   • Eye contact - rinse thoroughly with water
   • Skin contact - wash with soap and water
   • If swallowed - Contact a physician immediately. Give two glasses of water and induce vomiting by sticking fingers down the throat.

Notice: Avoid spilling brake fluid on any of the vehicle's painted surfaces, wiring, cables, or electric connectors. Brake fluid will damage the paint and the electrical connections. If any fluid is spilled on the vehicle, flush the area to lessen the damage.

Important:

   • Only use Delco Supreme 11 Brake Fluid GM P/N 12377967, or equivalent DOT-3 Brake fluid.
   • Do not use power steering or transmission fluid in the brake system.
   • Do not re-use brake fluid accumulated during the brake system bleeding.
   • Always store the brake fluid in a closed container. Re-seal the brake fluid containers immediately after use. Do not use brake fluid left in an open or improperly sealed container. The fluid absorbs moisture or can become contaminated.
   • The brake fluid may begin to boil if any of the following liquids are present:
      - Improper brake fluid
      - Mineral oil
      - Power steering fluid
      - Transmission fluid
      - Water
   • The rubber components in the brake hydraulic system could deteriorate if any of the following liquids are present:
      - Improper brake fluid
      - Mineral oil
      - Power steering fluid
      - Transmission fluid
      - Water
   • If the master cylinder cap diaphragm is swollen, then the rubber parts have deteriorated. This deterioration may also be evidenced by swollen wheel cylinder boots and caliper boots. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Flushing .
   • If the deterioration of the rubber parts is evident, disassemble all of the serviceable hydraulic components. Refer to Master Cylinder Overhaul and wash using denatured alcohol. Dry these parts with non-lubricated compressed air before assembly to keep alcohol out of the system, including hoses and non-serviceable hydraulic components.
   • Refill the brake system using new brake fluid. Flush and bleed the system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .

  1. Inspect for a cracked master cylinder casting or brake fluid around the master cylinder. Leaks are indicated even if there is only a drop of fluid. A damp condition is not abnormal.
  2. Inspect for a binding pedal linkage. If the pedal linkage is satisfactory, disassemble the master cylinder. Inspect the master cylinder for a swollen or elongated primary piston seal(s). Swollen seals indicate substandard or contaminated brake fluid. If the brake fluid is contaminated perform the following steps:
  3. 2.1. Disassemble and clean all of the components
    2.2. Replace all rubber components
    2.3. Flush all pipes
