J 21177-A Drum to
Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange in order
to insure proper balance upon reassembly.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires
and Wheels.
- Remove the brake drum. Mark the relationship of the drum to the
axle flange in order to ensure proper balance upon reassembly.
- Measure the drum inside
diameter (ID) using the J 21177-A
- Turning the wheel star, adjust the shoe and lining diameter to
0.76 mm (0.030 in) less than the inside diameter for each rear
wheel.
- Install the brake drum, aligning them to the marks made during
removal.
- Install the tire and wheel. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Apply the brake pedal 30-35 times.
Wait one second between each application in order to self-adjust the
drum to shoe clearance.
