J 21177-A Drum to Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the axle flange in order to insure proper balance upon reassembly.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the brake drum. Mark the relationship of the drum to the axle flange in order to ensure proper balance upon reassembly.

  5. Object Number: 176315  Size: SH
  6. Measure the drum inside diameter (ID) using the J 21177-A
  7. Turning the wheel star, adjust the shoe and lining diameter to 0.76 mm (0.030 in) less than the inside diameter for each rear wheel.
  8. Install the brake drum, aligning them to the marks made during removal.
  9. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Apply the brake pedal 30-35 times.
  12. Wait one second between each application in order to self-adjust the drum to shoe clearance.
