Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer
Removal Procedure
- Remove the drive belt from the vehicle. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Remove the power steering hose retaining nut (1) from the retaining bracket (2).
- Remove the pressure hose (4) from the power steering pump (1).
- Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
- Remove the pressure hose (4) from the retaining bracket (6).
- Remove the pressure hose (4) from the power steering gear (5).
- Remove the pressure hose (4) from the vehicle.
Notice: Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports thoroughly
of any debris. Failure to do so could result in contamination and damage to
the power steering system components.
- Install the seal extraction end of the
J 44586
(2) to the power steering gear oil seal (1).
- Extract the power steering gear oil seal (1) from the power steering gear using the
J 44586
(2) with the aid of a flat-bladed tool (3) for additional leverage.
Installation Procedure
- Install the NEW power steering gear oil seal (1) to the power steering gear using the seal installation
end of the
J 44586
(2).
- Ensure the power steering gear oil seals (1) are fully seated in the power
steering gear.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
Notice: The inlet and outlet hoses must not be twisted during installation.
Do not bend or distort the inlet or outlet hoses to make installation easier.
Failure to follow these procedures could result in component damage.
- Install the pressure hose (4) to the power steering gear (5).
Tighten
Tighten the pressure hose to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Install the pressure hose (4) to retainer (6).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the pressure hose (4) to the power steering pump (1).
Tighten
Tighten the pressure hose to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
- Install the power steering hose retaining bracket (2) and the retaining nut (1).
Tighten
Tighten the retainer nut (1) to 5 N·m (45 lb in).
- Ensure the power steering hose has sufficient clearance from the exhaust manifold.
- Install the drive belt to the power steering pump pulley. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Bleed the air from the power steering system. Refer to
Power Steering System Bleeding
.
