J 44586 Power Steering Gear Oil Seal Remover/Installer

1. Remove the power steering hose retaining nut (1) and the retaining bracket (2).



2. Remove the power steering return hose (3) from the power steering pump (1).
3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
4. Remove the retaining bolt and screw from the cooler pipe brackets.
5. Remove the power steering return hose (3) from the retainer (6).
6. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement .
7. Remove the power steering return hose (3) from the power steering gear (5).
8. Remove the power steering return hose (3) from the vehicle.




Notice: Clean the power steering gear inlet and outlet ports thoroughly of any debris. Failure to do so could result in contamination and damage to the power steering system components.

9. Install the seal extraction end of the J 44586  (2) to the power steering gear oil seal (1).



10. Extract the power steering gear oil seal (1) from the power steering gear using the J 44586  (2) with the aid of a flat bladed tool (3) for additional leverage.

1. Install the NEW power steering gear oil seal (1) to the power steering gear using the seal installation end of the J 44586  (2).



2. Ensure the power steering gear oil seals (1) are fully seated in the power steering gear.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.





Notice: The inlet and outlet hoses must not be twisted during installation. Do not bend or distort the inlet or outlet hoses to make installation easier. Failure to follow these procedures could result in component damage.

3. Install the power steering return hose (3) to the power steering gear (5).

Tighten
Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

4. Install the power steering pressure hose to the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Pressure Pipe/Hose Replacement .
5. Install the power steering return hose (3) to the retainer (6).
6. Install the retaining bolt and screw to the cooler pipe brackets.

Tighten
Tighten to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

7. Lower the vehicle.
8. Install the power steering return hose (3) to the power steering pump (1).



9. Install the power steering hose retaining bracket (2) and the retaining nut (1).

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

10. Ensure the power steering hose has sufficient clearance from the exhaust manifold.
11. Bleed the air from the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
