DTC Descriptor
DTC 052 : Heated Seat Ground Fault
Circuit/System Description
The seat heater mat which is a part of the heated seat system is calibrated as a part of the inflatable restraint Passenger Presence System (PPS). If the vehicle is equipped with a front passenger seat heater, the PPS continuously monitors for faults from
the heated seat element. If the PPS determines there is a fault in the heated seat element, the PPS will set DTC 052. The PPS module illuminates the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator and notifies the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) that a fault is present
when the DTC sets. The SDM will set DTC B0081 indicating a PPS fault and request the instrument panel cluster (IPC) to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator. The SDM will also disable the deployment of the I/P inflator module. The heater seat mat along with
the PPS is a calibrated system and must be replaced as a complete unit
Conditions for Running the DTC
Ignition voltage is between 9-16 volts.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The PPS has detected the heated seat element voltage out of range.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• | The PPS will set a DTC 052 and communicate to the SDM that a PPS DTC has set. |
• | The PPS will also set DTC 056 indicating that a PPS internal system fault has occurred. DTC 052 will remain current until the rezeroing procedure has been successfully performed. |
• | The SDM will set DTC B0081. |
• | The SDM disables the I/P inflator module deployment loop. |
• | The PPS will illuminate the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator. |
• | The SDM requests the IPC to illuminate the AIR BAG indicator and display the message "Service Air Bag." |
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
• | The condition for setting the DTC no longer exists. |
• | A history DTC will clear once 100 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred. |
Diagnostic Aids
If there is a fault in the passenger heated seat element supply circuit, the entire PPS system must be replaced.

Circuit/System Verification
- Ignition ON, verify that the passenger heated seat operates properly.
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the PPS module X1 harness connector.
- Ignition ON, heated seat ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the passenger heated seat back low reference circuit terminal 10 and ground.
⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the low reference circuit for a short to ground, open/high resistance. |
- If all the circuits test normal, replace the PPS.
Repair Instructions
Perform the
Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
