Gap at Rear Edge of Front Floor Console Shifter Trim Plate (Modify Rear Clip Towers)

Subject:Gap at Rear Edge of Front Floor Console Shifter Trim Plate (Modify Rear Clip Towers)

Models:2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Condition

Some customers may comment on a gap at the rear edge of the floor console shifter trim plate.

Cause

This condition may be caused by interference between the console trim plate rear clip towers and the center floor console assembly. The rear clip towers may not allow the rear trim plate clips to seat, creating the gap.

Correction

Remove the front floor console trim plate and modify the two rear clip towers using the steps below.

  1. Set the parking brake.
  2. Turn the ignition key to the ON position with the engine off (engine should not be running).
  3. Depress the brake pedal and place the shifter into the neutral ("N") position.
  4. Important: Release the shifter boot from the shifter knob by pulling the boot retainer down in order to gain access to the shift knob front retaining screw.

  5. Remove the shift control knob. Refer to Floor Shift Control Knob Replacement in SI.
  6. Remove the front floor console trim plate. Refer to Front Floor Console Accessory Trim Plate Replacement in SI.
  7. Place the trim plate face down on a work bench.

  8. Object Number: 2176329 Size: SH
  9. Locate the two rear clip towers (1) on the trim plate.

  10. Object Number: 2176331 Size: SH

Important: Do not remove the entire clip tower or the trim plate may slide inside the console slot. Remove 1-2 mm (0.04-0.08 in) from the outer radius (1).

  11. Modify the outer radius (1) ONLY on the two rear clip towers using a pair of side cutters.
  12. Important: When installing the trim plate, make sure you push the trim plate completely forward so no gap is created between the trim plate and the I/P dash. Engage the front clips on the trim plate first, then seat the rear clips.

  13. Install the front floor console trim plate by pushing the trim plate forward and aligning the two top guide pins into the I/P dash. Engage the front clips on the trim plate first, then seat the rear trim clips.
  14. Install the shift knob. Refer to Floor Shift Control Knob Replacement in SI.
  15. Place the shifter into Park ("P") and turn the ignition key to the OFF position.
  16. Release the parking brake.
  17. Verify that the trim panel clips are seated and the condition has been corrected.
