The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Some owners may comment that the SES Light is on. Upon inspection you may find DTC P1400 (Cold Start Emission Reduction Control System) stored in the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
Before proceeding, using GMVIS, verify which emissions system the vehicle you are working on has.
Chevrolet Malibu and Pontiac G6 models with RPO NU6 Emission System
Vehicles with this emissions system should have the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) reprogrammed with a new calibration using the TIS2WEB Service Programming System (SPS). As always, make sure your Tech 2® is updated with the latest software version.
Important: The part numbers for the new calibrations are 12630409 (engine) and 12630410 (engine diagnostic). Use TIS2WEB on or after 08/27/08 to obtain the calibrations.

Engineering is currently developing new PCM calibrations to address this issue and they should be available in the near future. In the meantime clear the DTC from the PCM and advise the vehicle owner that a new calibration will be available soon and that you will contact them at that time. In addition advise them that driving the vehicle will not cause any damage to the engine, emission system or other parts of the vehicle.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
