Steering Gear Replacement Electronic Power Steering

Removal Procedure

    Notice: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

       • The steering column
       • The intermediate shaft
       • The steering gear
    After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

  1. Turn the front wheels to the straight forward position and secure the steering wheel from moving.
  2. Disengage the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
  3. Separate the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.

  5. Remove the transmission rear mount bolt.

  6. Object Number: 1229955  Size: SH
  7. Remove the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers from the steering gear.
  8. Important: The position of the steering gear will need to be manipulated to remove it through the left front wheel opening.

  9. Remove the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.
  10. Transfer any parts as needed.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

    Important: Start all of the bolts and nuts by hand before finalizing any torques.

  3. Install the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers to the steering gear.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 70 N·m (52 lb ft) plus an additional 90 degrees.

  5. Install the transmission rear mount bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).

  7. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement.
  8. Install the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement.
  9. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment.

Steering Gear Replacement Hydraulic Power Steering (HPS)

Removal Procedure

    Notice: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

       • The steering column
       • The intermediate shaft
       • The steering gear
    After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

  1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight forward position, support it from movement.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  4. Remove the tie rod end castle nuts.

    Notice: Do not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or a wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result.

  6. Using the J 24319-B , separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.

  7. Object Number: 1775856  Size: SH
  8. Remove the intermediate shaft to steering gear pinch bolt (1). Discard the bolt.
  9. Important: Secure the steering wheel in the straight forward position before separating the intermediate shaft from the steering gear, or damage to the SIR coil will occur.

  10. Separate the intermediate shaft (2) from the steering gear (3).

  12. Loosen the transaxle mount through bolt.
  13. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  14. Disconnect the HO2S sensor harness from the transmission mount bracket.
  15. Remove the 3 transaxle mount to transaxle bolts.

  17. Remove the 3 transaxle bracket to frame nuts.
  18. Position the transaxle bracket and rear mount aside.

  19. Object Number: 1775901  Size: SH
  20. Remove the bolt (1) and disconnect the power steering gear inlet (2) and outlet (4) pipe/hoses from the power steering gear (3). Cap off the pipe/hoses and position aside.

  21. Object Number: 1813904  Size: SH
  22. Remove the power steering gear outlet pipe routing pin-style retainer from the right rear side of the frame.
  23. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts, nuts, and washers from the gear.
  24. Important: The power steering gear will need to be rotated while it is removed through the left wheel opening.

  25. Remove the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  26. If the power steering gear is to be replaced, transfer the outer tie rod ends to the new steering gear.

Installation Procedure

    Important: The power steering gear will need to be rotated while it is installed through the left wheel opening.

  1. Position the power steering gear into the vehicle.
  2. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts, nuts and washers to the power steering gear.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the mounting bolts, nuts to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  6. Install the power steering gear outlet pipe routing pin-style retainer to the right rear side of the frame.

  7. Object Number: 1775901  Size: SH
  8. Connect the power steering gear inlet (2) and outlet (4) pipe/hoses to the power steering gear (3) and install the bolt (1). Prior to tightening the retaining bolt (1), rotate the outlet pipe (4) clockwise/down so it touches the inlet pipe (2). Verify the hoses are still touching after the retaining bolt is tight.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the pipe/hose to power steering gear bolt to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  10. Install the new intermediate steering shaft to steering gear pinch bolt (1).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the pinch bolt to 49 N·m (36 lb ft).

  12. Position the transaxle bracket and rear mount back to their original position.

  13. Object Number: 1812229  Size: SH
  14. Install the 3 transaxle bracket to frame nuts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle bracket to frame nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  16. Install the 3 transaxle mount to transaxle bolts.
  17. Tighten

        • LZ4 Engines: Tighten the transaxle mount bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).
        • LZ9 Engines: Tighten the transaxle mount bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
  18. Connect the HO2S sensor harness to the transmission mount bracket.
  19. Connect the HO2S electrical connector.

  21. Tighten the transaxle mount through bolt.
  22. Tighten

        • LZ4 Engines: Tighten the transaxle mount bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).
        • LZ9 Engines: Tighten the transaxle mount bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
  23. Position the outer tie rod ends into the steering knuckles.
  24. Important: Hold the ball stud from turning during installation of the castle nut.

  25. Install new torque castle nuts to the tie rod end ball studs.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the castle nuts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft) plus 90 degrees rotation.

  27. Install the front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  28. Lower the vehicle.
  29. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  30. Measure the wheel alignment and adjust as necessary. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement .
