To prevent damage when removing the valve and pinion assembly from the housing on a rack and pinion steering gear, a press must by used (Figure 1). Hammering on the threaded end of the pinion to drive the valve and pinion assembly out can cause the valve pin to shear. This will result in an inoperative valve which cannot be repaired, but must be replaced.
