This bulletin is being released to insure gas supports are installed properly in the field.
on 1981 Malibus with the 69 body style, the smaller diameter rod is to be toward the front of the car.
For all other deck lid styles (1981 Monte Carlos and all Chevrolet passenger cars), the smaller diameter rod is to be toward the rear of the car.
On all hatches and tailgates, the smaller diameter rod is to be attached to the body side of the opening.
Should the gas support be installed improperly, the oil in the gas support cylinder will not lubricate its seal, resulting in shorter life and poor functioning of the gas supports.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
