WHEEL WELL RUBBER SPLASH SHIELD RELATED NOISE CONDITION

SUBJECT: WHEEL WELL RUBBER SPLASH SHIELD RELATED NOISE CONDITIONS (MODIFY SHIELD AND REPLACE FASTENERS)

MODELS: 1995 CHEVROLET LUMINA AND MONTE CARLO WITH 3.4L V6 ENGINE (VIN X - RPO LQ1)

CONDITION:

SOME VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT ONE OR BOTH OF THE CONDITIONS INDICATED BELOW:

A. RUBBING TYPE NOISE AUDIBLE DURING A FULL RIGHT HAND TURNING MANEUVER.

B. METALLIC CLICKING NOISE MOST APPARENT DURING SHARP/HARSH ROAD INPUTS TO THE FRONT SUSPENSION.

CAUSE:

A. TIRE CONTACTS ENGINE COMPARTMENT RUBBER SPLASH SHIELDS IN RIGHT FRONT WHEEL WELL.

B. RUBBER SPLASH SHIELD FASTENERS CONTACT SUSPENSION RIGHT FRONT CONTROL ARM.

CORRECTION:

FOLLOWING PROCEDURE BELOW, MODIFY EXISTING INNER AND OUTER ENGINE COMPARTMENT RUBBER SPLASH SHIELDS AND REPLACE TWO (2) OF THE EXISTING FASTENERS WITH NON-METALLIC FASTENERS.

1. RAISE AND SUITABLY SUPPORT VEHICLE.

2. REMOVE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY.

3. REMOVE FOUR (4) ATTACHING SCREWS SECURING REAR PORTION OF UPPER AND LOWER SPLASH SHIELDS TO WHEEL WELL.

4. CUT OUT ATTACHED TEMPLATE "A" AND "B" ALONG OUTLINE INDICATED.

5. POSITION AND SECURE TEMPLATE "A" WITH TAPE TO THE UPPER SPLASH SHIELD. REMOVE SHADED AREA AND CUT SLIT IN SPLASH SHIELD AS INDICATED ON TEMPLATE (FIGURE 1).

6. FOLD UPPER SPLASH SHIELD ALONG LINE INDICATED AND TUCK THE TAB UNDER THE BODY RAIL.

7. POSITION AND SECURE TEMPLATE "B" WITH TAPE TO THE LOWER SPLASH SHIELD. REMOVE SHADED AREA INDICATED ON TEMPLATE (FIGURE 1).

8. POSITION UPPER AND LOWER SPLASH SHIELDS TO WHEEL WELL USING ONLY THREE (3) OF THE FASTENERS THAT WERE REMOVED. TORQUE FASTENERS TO 3 N.M (2.2 LBS. FT.).

9. LOCATE, REMOVE AND DISCARD TWO (2) SCREWS AND TWO (2) J-NUTS SECURING LOWER SPLASH SHIELD TO UPPER SPLASH SHIELD DIRECTLY BEHIND BRAKE CALIPER ABOVE CONTROL ARM FORWARD SURFACE.

10. INSTALL TWO (2) PLASTIC RIVETS, P/N 14063981, THROUGH HOLES OF LOWER AND THEN UPPER SHIELD, SECURE SHIELDS TOGETHER.

11. INSTALL WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY AND TORQUE LUG NUTS TO 140 N.M (100 LB.FT.).

12. LOWER VEHICLE.
