SUBJECT: MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP ILLUMINATES/DTC P1403 IS STORED IN THE PCM (REPLACE PROM)

MODELS: 1994 CHEVROLET LUMINA FROM SOP - EOP 1995 CHEVROLET LUMINA 1994 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME - BUILT PRIOR TO VIN RD337215 1995 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME 1994 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX - BUILT PRIOR TO VIN RF237349 1995 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX WITH 3.4L TWIN DOHC ENGINE (VIN X - RPO LQ1)

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS OF 1994 W CARS EQUIPPED WITH A 3.4L TWIN DOHC ENGINE (RPO LQ1, VIN X) BUILT PRIOR TO THE VIN BREAKPOINTS ABOVE MAY EXPERIENCE A MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIGHT WITH A STORED DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) OF P1403 (SMALL EGR ORIFICE). ALSO INCLUDED ARE 1995 MODEL YEAR 3.4L ENGINE EQUIPPED VEHICLES. THIS CONDITION COULD OCCUR AT ALTITUDES ABOVE 5200 (1585 METERS) FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL.

CAUSE:

THE DIAGNOSTIC SELF TEST RUN ON THE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR) WAS FAILING THE EGR VALVE EVEN THOUGH THE VALVE ITSELF WAS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY.

CORRECTION:

A NEW PROM HAS BEEN RELEASED TO ADDRESS DTC P1403 THAT IS SET AT ALTITUDES GREATER THAN 5200 FEET (1585 METERS) ABOVE SEA LEVEL.
