Removal Procedure

  1. J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture
  2. J 28467-90 Engine Support Fixture Adapter
  3. J 36462 Engine Support Adapter Leg
  1. Remove the hood panel.
  2. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  3. Remove the engine mount strut brackets.
  4. Disconnect the electric cooling fan.
  5. Install the J 28467-360 , J 28467-90 , and J 36462 .
  6. Remove the air intake duct.
  7. Remove the automatic transmission vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to Vacuum Modulator Replacement .
  8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the transmission.
  9. Remove the transmission range switch from the transmission.
  10. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts.
  11. Raise the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
  12. Support the vehicle on a suitable stand.
  13. Remove the tire.
  14. Remove the left front bumper fascia splash shield.
  15. Remove the front exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement in Exhaust System.
  16. Remove the following steering gear components:
  17. 16.1. The heat shield
    16.2. The bolts
  18. Remove the front lower control arms from the front suspension struts.
  19. Remove the power steering fluid cooling pipe. Refer to Power Steering Fluid Cooling Pipe in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  20. Support the following components on suitable floor stands:
  21. 19.1. The drivetrain
    19.2. The front suspension frame
  22. Remove the transmission mount side bracket nuts. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement .
  23. Remove the engine mount frame side nuts.
  24. • For the 3.1L engine, refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
    • For the 3.4L engine, refer to Engine Mount Replacement and Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
    • For the 3.8L engine, refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  25. Remove the transmission brace.
  26. Remove the drivetrain bolts.
  27. Remove the front suspension frame bolts.
  28. Remove the drivetrain.
  29. Remove the front suspension frame.
  30. Disconnect the electrical connector from the vehicle speed sensor.
  31. Remove the front wheel driveshaft from the transmission.
  32. Remove the transmission converter cover.
  33. Remove the starter motor.
  34. • For the 3.1L engine, refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • For the 3.4L engine, refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • For the 3.8L engine, refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  35. Remove the transmission torque converter bolts.
  36. Remove the transaxle upper and lower oil cooler pipes. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement .
  37. Install a transmission jack.
  38. Remove the transmission mount from the engine. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  39. Remove the transmission fluid filler tube. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  40. Remove the transmission from the following bolts.
  41. Remove the transmission.
  42. Remove the transmission torque converter from the transmission.
  43. Remove the transmission from the transmission jack.
  44. Flush the transmission cooler and lines whenever the transmission is removed for overhaul or replacement of the following components occurs:
  45. 40.1. The transmission torque converter
    40.2. The transmission pump
    40.3. The case

    Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the transmission on the transmission jack.

  2. Object Number: 99944  Size: SH
  3. Install the transmission torque converter on the transmission.
  4. Install the transmission.
  5. Install the lower rear transmission to engine bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the transmission fluid filler tube. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  8. Install the transmission mount to the engine. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  9. Remove the jackstand from the transmission.
  10. Install the upper and lower transmission oil cooler pipes. Refer to Automatic Transmission Oil Cooler Pipes Replacement .
  11. Install the transmission torque converter bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 63 N·m (46 lb ft).

  13. Install the starter motor.
  14. • For the 3.1L engine, refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • For the 3.4L engine, refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
    • For the 3.8L engine, refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  15. Install the transmission converter cover.
  16. Install the transmission converter cover bolts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  18. Install the front wheel drive shafts to the transmission.
  19. Connect the electrical connector to the vehicle speed sensor.
  20. Install the drivetrain.
  21. Install the front suspension frame bolts.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 180 N·m (133 lb ft).

  23. Install the transmission brace.
  24. Install the transmission mount side bracket nuts. Refer to Transmission Mount Bracket Replacement .
  25. Remove the floor stands from the following components:
  26. 19.1. The drivetrain
    19.2. The front suspension frame
  27. Install the power steering fluid cooling pipe. Refer to Power Steering Fluid Cooling Pipe in Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  28. Install the front lower control arms to the front suspension struts.
  29. Install the steering gear bolts.
  30. Install the steering gear heat shield.
  31. Install the front exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to General Exhaust System Replacement in Exhaust System.
  32. Install the left front bumper fascia splash shield.
  33. Install the tire.
  34. Lower the vehicle.
  35. Install the upper transmission to engine bolts
  36. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  37. Install the transmission range switch on the transmission.
  38. Connect the electrical connectors on the transmission.
  39. Install the automatic transmission vacuum modulator pipe. Refer to Vacuum Modulator Replacement .
  40. Install the air intake duct.
  41. Remove the J 28467-360 , J 28467-90 , and J 36462 .
  42. Connect the electrical engine cooling fan.
  43. Install the engine mount strut brackets.
  44. Install the transmission fluid level indicator. Refer to Filler Tube Replacement .
  45. Install the hood pan.
  46. Adjust the fluid level.
  47. Adjust the shift linkage.
  48. Inspect for proper repair completions.
  49. Inspect for fluid leaks.
