DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P0410 IS SET IN THE POWERTRAIN

SUBJECT: DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P0410 IS SET IN THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) (REPLACE A.I.R. FILTER)

MODELS: 1996 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO, LUMINA 1996 OLDSMOBILE CUTLASS SUPREME 1996 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX WITH 3.4L TWIN DOHC V6 ENGINE (VIN X--RPO LQ1)

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT THAT THE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) IS ILLUMINATED ON THE VEHICLE'S INSTRUMENT PANEL. THERE WOULD BE NO PERFORMANCE DECREASE DUE TO THE MIL BEING ILLUMINATED.

CAUSE:

THIS CONDITION MAY BE THE RESULT OF WATER INTRODUCED INTO THE FRESH AIR INLET SIDE OF THE AIR INJECTION REACTION (A.I.R.) SYSTEM. WHEN WATER IS INTRODUCED INTO THE A.I.R. PUMP IT CAN CAUSE THE SOLENOID INTERNAL TO THE PUMP TO FAIL BECAUSE OF CORROSION. ADDITIONALLY, WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING (32 DEGREES F, 0 DEGREES C) THE WATER IN THE A.I.R. PUMP FREEZES CAUSING THE SYSTEM TO FAIL A SELF TEST. IN EXTREME CASES, IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE A.I.R. PUMP FUSE TO FAIL.

CORRECTION:

USE A TECHLINE TOOL DEVICE SUCH AS A TECH 1 OR 2 (OR EQUIVALENT) AND INTERROGATE THE PCM FOR DTC(S). IF A CODE P0410 IS PRESENT, THEN FOLLOW THE DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION IN THE VEHICLE SERVICE MANUAL. INSPECT THE A.I.R. SYSTEM FOR SIGNS OF WATER INTRUSION. IF THERE IS EVIDENCE OF WATER INTRUSION, THEN IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING REPAIRS.

1. REMOVE THE A.I.R. PUMP. IF CONTAMINATED WITH WATER, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PUMP WITH P/N 24505066. THE SOLENOID IN THE OUTLET SIDE OF THE PUMP SHOULD BE FREE TO MOVE WHEN PRESSED WITH A FLAT TIPPED DEVICE LIKE A WRITING PEN. IF NOT, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE PUMP. 2. INSPECT THE A.I.R. HOSES FROM THE THE PUMP TO THE CHECK VALVES FOR WATER, DRAIN AS NECESSARY. 3. INSPECT THE A.I.R. CHECK VALVES FOR SEALING BY ATTACHING A KENT-MOORE MITY-VAC HAND VACUUM PUMP (J23738-A) OR EQUIVALENT TO THE PUMP SIDE OF THE VALVE. THE CHECK VALVE SHOULD GRADUALLY LEAK DOWN FROM 20 INCHES OF MERCURY, IF NOT, REPLACE THE CHECK VALVE, P/N 24506656. 4. REPLACE THE A.I.R. FILTER WITH P/N 24507262. 5. INSTALL HOSE, P/N 10217106, ON THE OPEN END OF THE A.I.R. INLET PIPE THAT ATTACHES TO THE A.I.R. FILTER. THE HOSE SHOULD BE POSITIONED SO THE BEND IN THE HOSE POINTS TOWARD THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE AND SLIGHTLY DOWN FOR WATER DRAIN OFF. SECURE WITH DEALERSHIP SUPPLIED HOSE CLAMP. 6. IF THE A.I.R. PUMP FUSE HAS FAILED, REPLACE THE FUSE.
