Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the front end sheet metal diagonal brace. Refer to Front End Sheet Metal Diagonal Brace Replacement in Body Front End.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls-3.1L or Air Cleaner Element Replacement in Engine Controls-3.8L.
  3. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  4. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  5. Disconnect the battery (positive) cable.
  6. Remove the battery (positive) cable nut and cable from the engine wiring harness junction block.

  8. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable bolt from the upper tie bar.
  9. Remove the battery ground (negative) cable nut and cable from the transaxle stud.
  10. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  12. For the 3100, remove the battery (positive) cable (9) from the starter motor BAT terminal.

  14. For the 3800, remove the battery (positive) cable (7) from the starter motor BAT terminal.
  15. Remove the battery ground (negative) and battery (positive) cables from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the battery ground (negative) and the battery (positive) cables to the vehicle.
  2. For the 3100, install the battery (positive) cable (9) to the starter motor BAT terminal.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (8).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (8) to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  6. For the 3800, install the battery (positive) cable (7) to the starter motor BAT terminal.
  7. Install the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (6).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (6) to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Install the battery ground (negative) cable and nut to the transaxle stud.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten battery ground (negative) cable nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  12. Install the battery ground (negative) cable and the bolt to the upper tie bar.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten battery ground (negative) bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  14. Install battery (positive) cable and the nut to the engine wiring harness junction block.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the battery (positive) bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  16. Install battery (positive) cable and the battery (positive) terminal bolt to the battery.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the battery (positive) terminal bolt to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

  18. Install the battery ground (negative) cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  19. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls-3.1L or Air Cleaner Element Replacement in Engine Controls-3.8L.
  20. Install the front end sheet metal diagonal brace. Refer to Front End Sheet Metal Diagonal Brace Replacement in Body Front End.
