DEFINITION: Exhaust system performance complaints, such as excessive back pressure or exhaust muffler rattle, are noticeable by their effect on engine performance. Other faulty vehicle components, such as emission control devices, have similar effects on engine performance and are characterized by the same symptoms.   1. Remove the muffler.
  2. Visually inspect the muffler.

Is there a restriction in the muffler?

Replace the muffler. Refer to one of the following:

  1. Muffler Replacement

Does the vehicle still have a loss of power and/or internal rattles?

System OK

Inspect the catalytic converter.

Is the honeycomb broken in the catalytic converter?

Go to Step 4

Go to Restricted Exhaust System Check in Engine Controls - 3.1L

Replace the catalytic converter. Refer to one of the following:

  1. Catalytic Converter Replacement
  2. Catalytic Converter Replacement

Does the vehicle still have a loss of power and/or internal rattles?
