When inspecting or replacing the exhaust system components, make sure that there is adequate clearance from all points on the underbody. Adequate clearance prevents overheating of the floor pan and possible damage to the passenger compartment insulation and the trim materials.

Check the complete exhaust system, nearby body areas, and the rear compartment lid for the following conditions which could permit exhaust fumes to seep into the rear compartment or the passenger compartment:

    • Broken or damaged parts
    • Missing or misaligned parts
    • Open seams
    • Holes
    • Loose connections
    • Other deterioration

Dust or water in the rear compartment may be an indication of a problem in one of these areas. Correct faulty areas immediately. For continued integrity, the exhaust pipe rearward of the exhaust muffler must be replaced whenever a new exhaust muffler is installed.

Exhaust Muffler

On the single exhaust system the resonator and the exhaust pipe are serviced as a unit. The exhaust muffler and the tail pipe are serviced as a unit.

On the dual exhaust system, the left-hand exhaust muffler, the tail pipes, and the partial exhaust pipes are serviced as one unit. The right-hand exhaust muffler and the tail pipes are serviced as one unit. The resonator and the exhaust pipe are serviced as one unit.

Hangers

Various types of hangers are used to support the exhaust systems. These include:

    • Exhaust pipe hangers
    • Exhaust hanger brackets
    • Exhaust hanger insulators

The installation of the exhaust system supports is very important. Improperly installed supports cause annoying vibrations.

Clamps

Two types of clamps are used for connecting exhaust system slip joints:

    • Saddle/U-bolt
    • Single Nut Compression

Coat the slip joints with exhaust system sealer before assembling.

Welded Connections

When servicing a welded connection, clamp the new connection. When installing replacement parts, coat the slip joints with exhaust system sealer before assembling.

Three Way Catalytic Converter

The three way catalytic converter is an emission control device that is added to the exhaust system to reduce pollutants from the exhaust gas stream.

Important: The three way catalytic converter requires the use of unleaded fuel only.

Periodic maintenance of the exhaust system is not required. If the vehicle is raised for other service, it is advisable to check the condition of the complete exhaust system.

On-Vehicle Service

Service the three individual components of the single exhaust system as follows:

    • Three way catalytic converter
    • Exhaust pipe and resonator
    • Exhaust muffler and tail pipe

Service the four individual components of the dual exhaust system as follows:

    • Three way catalytic converter
    • Exhaust pipe and resonator
    • Right-hand exhaust muffler and tail pipe
    • Left-hand exhaust muffler with the partial exhaust pipe and tail pipe
