Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement 3800 L36 (VIN K)

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 38491 Spark Plug Heat Shield Removal Tool

  1. Turn OFF the ignition switch.
  2. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.

  3. Object Number: 194244  Size: SH

    Notice: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

  4. Note the position of the spark plug wires before removing the wires. Refer to the callouts for coil-to-cylinder combinations.
  5. Gently pry the heat shield up from spark plugs using the J 38491 .

    Remove the spark plug wires (2,4,6) form the spark plugs at the rear of the engine.

  6. Remove the spark plug wires (1,3,5) from the spark plugs at the front of the engine. Refer to the callouts for the coil-to-cylinder combinations.

  7. Object Number: 194253  Size: SH
  8. Remove the spark plug wires from the wire looms.
  9. When replacing the spark plug wires transfer any of the following:

    • Boot heat shields
    • Spark plug wire conduit
    • Spark plug wire retaining clips

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 194220  Size: SH
  1. Position the spark plug wires to the engine.

  2. Object Number: 194231  Size: SH
  3. Connect the spark plug wires to the ignition coil in the proper position. Refer to the callouts for the coil-to-cylinder combinations.

  4. Object Number: 194253  Size: SH
  5. Connect the spark plug wires to the wire looms.

  6. Object Number: 194244  Size: SH
  7. Connect the spark plugs wires (2,4,6 shown) to the spark plugs. Refer to the callouts for the coil-to-cylinder combinations.
  8. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.8L.

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    Object Number: 47607  Size: SH
  1. Turn OFF the ignition switch.
  2. Remove the spark plug wire retaining clips from the engine.
  3. Notice: Twist the spark plug boot one-half turn in order to release the boot. Pull on the spark plug boot only. Do not pull on the spark plug wire or the wire could be damaged.

    Important: Transfer any of the following when replacing the spark plug wires:

       • Spark plug wire conduit
       • Spark plug wire retaining clips

  4. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs using the J 38491 . Be sure to note the position of the spark plug wires BEFORE removing the spark plug wires.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 200500  Size: SH
  1. Connect the spark plug wires (2,4,6) to the left side of the engine. Refer to the callouts for the coil-to-cylinder combinations.

  2. Object Number: 194150  Size: SH
  3. Connect the spark plug wires (1,3,5) to the right side of the engine.

  4. Object Number: 194134  Size: SH
  5. Install the spark plug wire retaining clips to the engine.
