Problem

Action

A damaged actuator rod

Replace the actuator rod.

Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

A restricted or bent actuator rod

Replace the actuator rod.

Refer to Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

There are burrs on any of the following components:

    • The steering shaft
    • The rack
    • The housing
    • The support
    • The coupling rod.

Inspect the components. Service the components as necessary.

Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Column Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

A distorted coupling slot in the rack

Clean, inspect and replace the components as necessary.

A misaligned housing to cover

Inspect the components. Service the components as necessary.

A bent ignition switch mounting bracket

Inspect the bracket. Replace the components as necessary.

An improperly adjusted shift linkage

Inspect the linkage. Replace the components as necessary.

Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .

A broken or deformed rack preload spring

Replace the components as necessary.

A bent steering shaft

Replace the components as necessary.
