Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment Rear Drum

  1. Adjust the rear brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment in Drum Brakes.
  2. Apply the parking brake to 10 clicks and release. Repeat this step five times.
  3. Turn the ignition to the ON position. Verify that the BRAKE indicator lamp is off.
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Turn the nut on the equalizer while spinning both rear wheels in order to adjust the parking brake. When either rear wheel develops drag, stop the adjustment and back off the equalizer nut one full turn.
  6. Apply the parking brake to four clicks and check the rear wheel rotation.
  7. Ensure that the wheel does not move when attempting to rotate it by hand in a forward direction. The wheel should drag or not move when attempting to rotate in a rearward direction.
  8. Release the parking brake and check for free wheel rotation.
  9. Lower the vehicle.

Park Brake Cable Service/Adjustment Rear Disc

  1. Apply the service brake pedal three times using pedal force of approximately 238 N (175 lbs).
  2. Important: Do not apply the service brake during the next step.

  3. Fully apply and release the parking brake three times.
  4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Mark the relationship of the wheel to the hub and bearing assembly.
  6. Use the following procedure in order to verify that the parking brake releases completely:
  7. 5.1. Turn the ignition on
    5.2. Ensure that the BRAKE warning lamp is in the OFF position
    5.3. If the BRAKE warning light is ON, verify that the pedal is in release mode and fully returned to the stop
    5.4. Pull downward on the front parking brake cable in order to remove the slack from the pedal
  8. Remove the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  9. Ensure that the parking brake levers on both calipers are against the lever stops on the caliper housings.
  10. If the parking brake levers are not against the stops observe the following procedure:
  11. 8.1. Check for binding in the rear cables
    8.2. Loosen the cables at the adjuster until both the left and right levers are against their stops

  12. Tighten the parking brake cable at the adjuster until either the left or the right lever (1) reaches the proper dimension (3).
  13. Important: Apply the service brake during the next step.

  14. Operate the parking brake several times in order to check the adjustments. The pedal should feel firm. The rear wheels should not rotate forward when the parking brake is fully applied. Repeat the previous step and this step if necessary.
  15. Remove the wheel nuts securing the rotor to the hub and bearing assembly.
  16. Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  17. Align the previous marks on the wheel and the hub and bearing assembly.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
