Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement 3.8L

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the engine mount struts from the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement and Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical-3.8L.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tire and Wheels.
  4. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.

  5. Object Number: 284304  Size: SH
  6. Remove the power steering return hose from the power steering pump.
  7. Remove the intermediate steering shaft from the power steering gear stub shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column -Tilt.
  8. Use a utility stand in order to support the frame.
  9. Remove the frame bolts from the rear of the frame. Refer to Frame Removal in Frame and Underbody.
  10. Notice: Do not lower the rear of the frame too far as damage to the engine components nearest to the cowl may result.

  11. Use the utility stand in order to lower the rear of the frame to gain access.
  12. Remove the power steering return line from the power steering gear.
  13. Remove the power steering return line from the clamp on the power steering gear.
  14. Remove the power steering cooler pipe retainer bolts.
  15. Remove the power steering cooler pipe from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering cooler pipe to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 284304  Size: SH
  3. Install the power steering cooler pipe retainer bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering cooler pipe retainer bolts to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  5. Install the power steering return line to the power steering gear.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering return line fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  7. Install the power steering return line to the clamp on the power steering gear.
  8. Install the power steering return hose to the power steering pump.
  9. Use the utility stand in order to raise the frame.
  10. Install NEW frame bolts to the rear of the frame. Refer to Frame Removal in Frame and Underbody.
  11. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the power steering gear stub shaft. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt.
  12. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tire and Wheels.
  13. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Install the engine mount struts to the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement and Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  16. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir. Refer to Refilling the Power Steering System .
  17. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  18. Inspect the power steering system for leaks. Refer to External Leakage Check .

Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement 3.1L

Removal Procedure

  1. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.
  2. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  3. Object Number: 282996  Size: MH
  4. Remove the power steering return hose from the power steering cooler pipe.
  5. Remove the power steering return line (4) from the power steering gear (2).
  6. Remove the clamp holding the power steering return line to the power steering gear.
  7. Remove the power steering cooler pipe retaining bolts (3) from the frame.

  8. Object Number: 282110  Size: SH
  9. Remove the power steering cooler pipe (1) from the frame .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 282110  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering cooler pipe to the frame (1).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the power steering cooler pipe retaining bolts to the frame.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering cooler pipe retaining bolts to 9.5 N·m (86 lb in).

  5. Install the clamp to the power steering gear to hold the power steering lines to the power steering gear.
  6. Install the power steering return line (4) to the power steering gear (2).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering return line fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  8. Install the power steering return hose to the power steering cooler pipe.
  9. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Fill the power steering system. Refer to Refilling the Power Steering System
  12. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding
  13. Check the power steering system for leaks. Refer to External Leakage Check .
