Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Left Front

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Disconnect the left spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the right engine mount strut at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  4. Remove the AIR check valve/pipe if equipped. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Check Valve and Check Valve Pipe Replacement - Bank 1 in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  5. Remove the thermostat bypass hose and pipe. Refer to Thermostat Bypass Pipes Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  6. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve from the left valve rocker arm cover.

  7. Object Number: 61833  Size: SH
  8. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  9. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover.
  10. Remove the left valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  11. Clean the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Clean and Inspect .
  12. Clean the valve rocker arm cover gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and the lower intake manifold.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 190588  Size: SH
  1. Install a new left valve rocker arm cover gasket into the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  3. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the rear of the lower intake manifold (1).

  4. Object Number: 190589  Size: SH

    Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  5. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the front of the lower intake manifold (1).

  6. Object Number: 61833  Size: SH
  7. Install the left valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Installation (Left Side) .
  8. Install the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve to the left valve rocker arm cover.
  9. Install the thermostat bypass hose and pipe. Refer to Thermostat Bypass Pipes Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  10. Install the AIR check valve/pipe if equipped. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Check Valve and Check Valve Pipe Replacement - Bank 1 in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  11. Install the right engine mount strut at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  12. Connect the left spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  13. Fill the engine cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.

Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Right Rear

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 261279  Size: SH
  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  5. Disconnect the right spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  6. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve.
  7. Remove the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve and the AIR check valve/pipe if equipped. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Check Valve and Check Valve Pipe Replacement - Bank 2 in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  8. Remove the ignition coil bracket with the coils. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  9. Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the right valve rocker arm cover.

  10. Object Number: 61834  Size: SH
  11. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  12. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover.
  13. Remove the right valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  14. Clean the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Clean and Inspect .
  15. Clean the valve rocker arm cover gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and the lower intake manifold.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 190589  Size: SH
  1. Install a new right valve rocker arm cover gasket to the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  3. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the rear of the lower intake manifold (1).

  4. Object Number: 190588  Size: SH

    Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  5. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the front of the lower intake manifold (1).

  6. Object Number: 61834  Size: SH
  7. Install the right valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Installation (Right Side) .
  8. Install the vacuum hose to the grommet in the right valve rocker arm cover.
  9. Install the ignition coil bracket with coils. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  10. Install the AIR check valve/pipe (if equipped) and the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Check Valve and Check Valve Pipe Replacement - Bank 1 in Engine Controls - 3.4L.

  11. Object Number: 261279  Size: SH
  12. Connect the vacuum hoses from the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve.
  13. Connect the right spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  14. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  15. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  16. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  17. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
