If you pull the headlamp knob all the way out, the headlamps will come on. Push the headlamp knob all the way in to turn off all the lamps. To use the flash-to-pass pull the multifunction lever toward you a little, but not so far that you hear a click. If the headlamps are off or on low-beam, the high-beam headlamps will turn on. The high-beam will stay on as long as you hold the lever toward you. The high-beam indicator on the instrument panel will come on during this operation. Release the multifunction lever to turn off the high-beams headlamps.
A light sensor on top of the instrument panel makes the DRL system work, be sure that it is not covered. The DRL system will make the high-beam headlamps come on at a reduced brightness when, the ignition is on the headlamp switch is off and the parking brake is released. When the DRL system is on, only the high-beam headlamps will be on. The headlamps, taillamps, sidemarker, instrument panel lamps will not be on. When it is dark enough outside, the high-beam headlamps will turn off and the vehicle's headlamps and parking lamps will turn on, including all other lamps that come on with the headlamps. When it is bright enough outside, the headlamps will go off and the high-beam headlamps will come on at reduced brightness.

A light will glow on the fog lamp switch to let you know that the fog lamps are on. Press the fog lamp switch again to turn the fog lamps off. The fog lamps will go off whenever you turn on the high-beam headlamps. When you return to the low-beams, the fog lamps will turn on again.
The front parking/turn signal lamps are located in the LH and RH headlamp capsules. These lamps can be operated at any time by turning the multifunction lever. When a turn is signaled, the appropriate front parking lamp flashes to signal a turn. The turn signals operate only with the ignition switch in RUN and will not operate during hazard flasher operation.
The front side marker lamps are located on the sides of the headlamp capsule. These lamps will light whenever the following conditions are met:
• | Headlamp or parking lamps ON. |
• | If the headlamp or parking lamps are OFF when a turn is signaled, the appropriate front side marker lamp will flash in unison with the front turn signal lamp. |
• | If the headlamps or parking lamps are ON when a turn is signaled, the front side marker lamp and front turn signal lamp flash alternately. |
The tail lamps, stop lamps and rear turn signal lamps are all incorporated into the rear tail lamp. The tail lamps are lit whenever the parking lamps or headlamps are in operation. The rear turn signal lamps flash with the front turn signal lamps whenever a turn is indicated with the turn signal/headlamp dimmer switch. The stop lamps light whenever the brake pedal is depressed and the stop lamp switch is closed.
The backup lamps are located in the tail lamps (Monte Carlo) and the rear compartment lid appilque (Impala). These lamps will light whenever the following condition is met:
Ignition switch in the ON position and the transaxle in reverse.
The high-mounted stop lamp is located in the center of the rear compartment lid. The high-mounted stop lamp lights whenever the brake pedal is depressed and the stop lamp switch is closed.
The license lamps are located in the rear bumper fascia. Whenever the headlamp or parking lamp switch is turned, the lamps light.
The spotlamp system (Special Equipment Option) consists of one, LH spotlamp (RPO 7X6), or two, LH and RH spotlamps (RPO 7X7). The spotlamps are mounted to the LH and RH windshield pillars. The interior lighting system includes side rail lamps and convenience lamps such as the compartment lamp, lighted rearview mirror and visor vanity mirror lamp. All associated wiring, controls and related hardware for these lamps are also included.
Two courtesy lamps under the instrument panel will come on when a door is opened, or when the interior lamps are turned on. To turn the courtesy lamps on, move the interior lamp dial all the way to the right.
The instrument panel compartment lamp will come on when the instrument panel compartment door is opened.
On vehicles so equipped, the lamps next to the visor mirror will come on when the mirror cover is raised.
The side rail lamps will come on when a door is opened, or when the inside lamps are turned on. There is also a switch in the side rail lamp to turn the side rail lamp on or off.
The rear compartment lamp will come on whenever the rear compartment lid is opened.
The courtesy lamps will come on and stay on for on for 40 seconds, whenever the UNLOCK button is pressed on the remote keyless entry transmitter. When a door is opened the courtesy lamps will stay on while the door is open and then turn off in 25 seconds after the door is closed. The rear window panel system functions as auxiliary turn signal and stoplamps. The lamps are mounted to the rear window panel. The relays are mounted in the rear compartment on the left side inner brace.
The rear compartment lid lamp system (Special Equipment Option) consists of the following components:
• | Two 4-inch, red-lensed lamps |
• | A warning lamp flasher |
• | A mercury switch |
All of these components are mounted to the rear compartment lid inner panel. Raising the rear compartment lid causes the mercury switch to activate the lamp flasher, which causes the lamps to flash alternately.
