J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 333146  Size: SH

    Notice: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.

  4. Install J 42640 into the bottom of the steering column.

  5. Object Number: 294376  Size: SH
  6. Position the intermediate steering shaft seal in order to provide access to the lower pinch bolt.

  7. Object Number: 294371  Size: SH
  8. Remove the lower pinch bolt from the power steering gear stub shaft (2).
  9. Remove the intermediate steering shaft (1) from the power steering gear stub shaft (2).
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Remove the left instrument panel insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

  12. Object Number: 454259  Size: SH
  13. Reposition the intermediate steering shaft seal in order to gain access to the upper pinch bolt.
  14. Remove the upper pinch bolt from the intermediate steering shaft.
  15. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering column.
  16. Remove the intermediate steering shaft.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 454259  Size: SH
  1. Position the intermediate steering shaft into place.
  2. Install the upper pinch bolt which secures the intermediate steering shaft to the steering column.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the pinch bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  4. Install the intermediate steering shaft seal onto the steering column.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  6. Install the intermediate steering shaft (1) to the power steering gear stub shaft (2).
  7. Install the lower pinch bolt which secures the intermediate steering shaft to the power steering gear stub shaft.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the pinch bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  9. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.

  10. Object Number: 294376  Size: SH
  11. Install the intermediate steering shaft seal onto the power steering gear.
  12. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Install the left instrument panel insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
